Template talk:Archive basics

[edit]I don't understand your recent change to this template. If you review the guideline that is linked to, it mentions the talk page itself and not the archives behind the talk page. For this reason I'd like to offer you the chance to undo the change to the template and establish consensus for the interpertation. It has been my understanding that talk page archives should be around 125k bytes in length. I reserve the right to still invoke the revert portion of BRD. Hasteur (talk) 18:00, 24 June 2014 (UTC)
- I had originally created it at 120K because that was my belief as well, however, the only thing I could come up with as written says 75K talk page size, and talk page archives are still talk pages, so unless it is wri somewhere else they have different numbers, I can't change it. I would LOVE to change it back to the 120-150 range and I would be very happy if you can find a page that offers such a number because that's where pages start having loading issues. — {{U|Technical 13}} (e • t • c) 18:18, 24 June 2014 (UTC)
- WP:AN and WP:ANI have a setting of 700k. WP:DRN has a setting for 200k. Wikipedia talk:Did you know and WP:RSN have a setting for 250k, Talk:Barack Obama has the setting at 250k but Talk:George W. Bush has a setting for 150k. Hasteur (talk) 18:35, 24 June 2014 (UTC)
- In the mean time Hasteur, I've modified the template to not show that message until the page size has hit the 150K threshold which is above what you asked for until we can find a proper place to link to. — {{U|Technical 13}} (e • t • c) 18:42, 24 June 2014 (UTC)
- I'm posing the question at Help talk:Archiving a talk page to see what the community forms a consensus around. Hasteur (talk) 18:46, 24 June 2014 (UTC)
- The "smart" functionality should probably be removed altogether, otherwise the template is no longer just "archive basics". –xenotalk 18:37, 24 June 2014 (UTC)
- Xeno, that would result in multiMB archive files that would be inaccessible. It's still archive basics, since it doesn't actually change the archive counter for you. Once Equazcion has had time to add that to the script, then this coding will no longer be needed. — {{U|Technical 13}} (e • t • c) 18:42, 24 June 2014 (UTC)
- Your edit is now imposing potentially undesired functionality on people who thought they were adopting a simple archive template to run their one-click archiving script. These people may have in mind the size of archive they want and will manually increment their talk page at this time. Many keep talk archives in excess of 250-300k or more. The argument remains that you are displaying a message on individual s talk pages where they have not requested this functionality of this template because you unilaterally added it. –xenotalk 18:52, 24 June 2014 (UTC)
