From Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

Usage

[edit]

Creates the a row in a wikitable for use in species lists, such as at List of felids. The table header and footer can be generated with {{Species table}} and {{Species table/end}}.

Fields:

  • Required
    • name
    • binomial
    • image
    • authority-name
    • authority-year
    • range
    • size (required unless "no-ecology" is set)
    • habitat (required unless "no-ecology" is set)
    • hunting (required unless "no-ecology" or "no-diet" is set)
    • population
    • direction
  • Optional
    • image-size (sets a width for the image e.g. "160px" to prevent tall images from stretching the table row; defaults to 180px if not set)
    • image-alt (optional but recommended, sets alt-text for the image)
    • image2 / image-size2 / image-alt2 (adds a second image below the first, for dimorphic species. To avoid stretching the table vertically, it is recommended to set the image-size / image-size2 parameters to 120px or smaller unless the images are much wider than tall.)
    • image-caption / image2-caption (adds a caption below the first / second image. To avoid stretching the table vertically, this is generally not recommended with large images.)
    • authority-not-original (including this with any valueadds parenthesis around the author citation; see Author citation (zoology))
    • subspecies (adds subspecies information below the scientific name; recommended to be a collapsible list if there are eight or more subspecies)
    • range-size (sets a width for the range map image e.g. "160px" to prevent tall images from stretching the table row; defaults to 180px if not set)
    • range-alt (optional but recommended, sets a caption (as alt-text) for the range map image)
    • iucn-status (see {{IUCNCS}} for options)
    • status-ref (normally, a reference to the species' IUCN page is placed at the end of the "direction" parameter; if population and direction are excluded, the reference can be placed after the status link with this parameter)
    • no-diet (removes the "Diet" section of the "Size and ecology" column)
    • no-ecology (removes the "Size and ecology" column)

no-diet

[edit]

With |no-diet=yes to remove the "Diet" section of the "Size and ecology" column; this is not standard, but may be useful for articles where all of the species have very similar diets to remove repetition. {{Species table|genus=[[Catopuma]]|authority-name=[[Nikolai Severtzov|Severtzov]]|authority-year=1858|species-count=two|nonote=y}}

no-ecology

[edit]

With |no-ecology=yes to remove the "Size and ecology" column; this is not standard, but may be useful for articles where all of the species have very similar ecology to remove repetition. Consider also setting "narrow-percent" in the header if the resulting table has too much empty space. A table row is included in this example to demonstrate the result; note that both the header template and each row have to have "no-ecology" set or else the table will be malformed.

image2

[edit]

With |image2 to give a second image, for dimorphic species. The two images are given a caption with |image-caption and |image2-caption=caption. Additionally, status-ref is used to place the reference after the iucn-status field.
