,|next1=
and|next2=
may be left blank or omitted, in which case they are displayed as Terminus.- This template allows the use of two route descriptions,
|route1=
and|route2=
. If both routes should have the same description,|route=
may be used instead.- If
|route=
is used in addition to either of|route1=
and|route2=
, there may be unexpected results: to aid in locating these errors, the page is placed in hidden Category:Incompatible parameters in rail line template.

Colours
[edit]|col=
|col1=
|col2=

|lightcol1=
|lightcol2=
The |col=
parameters are used to set the colour of the two vertical bands which separate the three main columns. If these parameters are blank or omitted, the bands are present but their colours are undefined, and the appearance may vary between web browsers.
The colour set by |col=
is normally associated with the railway company or operator given in the |route=
parameter; if that parameter indicates both a major company and a minor company, or a rail operator and one of its services, |col=
should indicate the more important of the two. To indicate the less important of the two, the optional |lightcol=
parameter may be used; it will add a horizontal coloured band beneath the text of the |route=
parameter. If |lightcol=
is blank or omitted, the band is also omitted.
The major colours for the different rows may be set independently by using |col1=
and |col2=
; or both may be set to the same colour using |col=
. If |col=
is used in addition to either of the row-specific |coln=
parameters, there may be unexpected results: to aid in locating these errors, the page is placed in hidden Category:Incompatible parameters in rail line template. This happens even if one of them is present but blank: unused parameters should be omitted.
Where separate |routen=
parameters are used, the minor colours for the different rows may also be set independently by using |lightcol1=
and |lightcol2=
; or both may be set to the same colour using |lightcol=
. The row-specific |lightcoln=
parameters have precedence over |lightcol=
even if one of them is blank: unused parameters should be omitted.
For consistency, colours should be specified using colour templates, e.g. |col=
{{Caledonian colour}}
|lightcol=
{{Caledonian light}}
. The predefined colours are at WikiProject UK Railways/Colours list. Colours may also be given in the form of a six-character hex triplet. In either case, the initial #
sign is omitted, e.g. |col=be2d2c
|lightcol=d77f7e
.
The |lightcol=
parameters are preferred to the older method of setting a coloured background for some of the text, which had accessibility problems.
