The most recently available definitive document is THE ORDER OF WEARING AUSTRALIAN HONOURS AND AWARDS, 25 September 2007. Amongst other things, it states:
- Post-nominals within the Order of St John are not recognised as notified in the Governor-General’s media release of 14 August 1982.
The items in this list fall into a number of groups:
- 1. Those within the Australian System of Honours and Awards.
- 2. Those conferred by The Sovereign in exercise of the Royal Prerogative.
- 3. Those which recognise public and professional service and achievement.
- 4. Imperial awards.
Note that honorary awards of the Order of Australia are not made to Australians.
