Template:Medical resources/doc
This is a documentation subpage for Template:Medical resources. It may contain usage information, categories and other content that is not part of the original template page. |
This template is used on approximately 7,000 pages and changes may be widely noticed. Test changes in the template's /sandbox or /testcases subpages, or in your own user subpage. Consider discussing changes on the talk page before implementing them. |
This template is rated as ready for general use. It has reached a mature form and is thought to be bug-free and ready for use wherever appropriate. It is ready to mention on help pages and other Wikipedia resources as an option for new users to learn. To reduce server load and bad output, it should be improved by sandbox testing rather than repeated trial-and-error editing. |
Description
[edit]This metadata template links Wikipedia articles to various medical classifications and certain other external clinical or patient resources. These resources are common to medical content; but not relevant to the average reader.
Position
[edit]Please place Medical Resources correctly. The template should be placed:
- At the end of the last section of an article
- In the majority of medical articles, this will be either a ==References== or ==External links== section
- In line with the Manual of Style, an ==External links== section should not be created if the sole content will just be this template
- Above all navigation templates—including Authority control
- Above all [[Category:]] and stub template codes in the editor.
Usage
[edit]Some parameter's labels are automatically populated from Wikidata; but can be overridden locally.
Please note: because the external link used by each resource template will act as its own reference, there is no requirement for further verifiability within this template. (Any reference provided will also fail to populate the article Reference list and create a (second) separate list at the very bottom of the article.)
Examples
[edit]{{Medical resources | ICD11 = <!-- {{ICD11|Xxx.x}} --> | ICD10 = <!-- {{ICD10|Xxx.x}} --> | ICD10CM = <!-- {{ICD10CM|Xxx.xxxx}} --> | ICD9 = <!-- {{ICD9|xxx}} --> | ICDO = | OMIM = | MeshID = | DiseasesDB = | SNOMED CT = | MedlinePlus = | eMedicineSubj = | eMedicineTopic = | PatientUK = | NCI = | GeneReviewsNBK = | GeneReviewsName = | NORD = | GARDNum = | GARDName = | RP = | AO = | WO = | OrthoInfo = | Orphanet = | Scholia = | OB = }}
Explanations
[edit]As a rule of thumb:
- Insert the empty version
- Click "Show preview" to see which sources are automatically pulled from Wikidata
- (Optional) If you know more codes, IDs, etc; add them in the template using their named parameter. Alternatively, consider adding them to the article's "Wikidata item", so that all versions of Wikipedia will automatically benefit.
Empty
[edit]Adding an empty version of the template relies wholly on Wikidata: {{Medical resources}}
Selective suppression
[edit]You can suppress parameters with blank parameters or local knowledge. This method is also reliant wholly on Wikidata, except the suppressed or overwritten parameters:
- Blank parameter: {{Medical resources |PatientUK= |MeshID= |NCI=}}
- Local knowledge override: {{Medical resources |MeshID=D000001}}
- Combination it is possible to combine these to suppress some and locally override others: {{Medical resources |PatientUK= |MeshID=D000001 |NCI=}}
Full
[edit]The full list of parameters is as follows (may not be up-to-date) : {{Medical resources | ICD11 = {{ICD11|Xxx.x}} | ICD10 = {{ICD10|Xxx.x}} | ICD10CM = {{ICD10CM|Xxx.xxxx}} | ICD9 = {{ICD9|xxx}} | ICDO = x.xx | OMIM = x.xx | MeshID = D000001 | DiseasesDB = x.xx | SNOMED CT = xxxxxxxxx | MedlinePlus = x.xx | eMedicineSubj = x.xx | eMedicineTopic = x.xx | PatientUK = x.xx | NCI = x.xx | GeneReviewsNBK = x.xx | GeneReviewsName = x.xx | NORD = x.xx | GARDNum = x.xx | GARDName = x.xx | RP = x.xx | AO = x.xx | WO = x.xx | OrthoInfo = x.xx | Orphanet = x.xx | Scholia = x.xx | OB = xxxx }}

Adding new parameters
[edit](This in information is for template editors)
When adding new parameters that are linked to Wikidata there are a couple of pre-defined parameter sets for the {{wdib}} wrapper, which group commonly defined parameters.
Parameter set 1, |ps=1
, has the following presets
rank = "best" fetchwikidata = "ALL" onlysourced = "no" noicon = "true"
Parameter set 2, |ps=2
, has the following presets
rank = "best" fetchwikidata = "ALL" onlysourced = "no" noicon = "true" linked = "no" plaindate = "true"
