Insert the symbol for the liaison within a phonological transcription (for example in French) using {{Liaison}}.

Warning
This liaison symbol (as well as the syllabic separation symbol ".") should never be used in the transcription of the various possible phonetic realizations (conventionally noted between [square brackets], normally independently of the language and that can be using a much richer set of IPA symbols for phonetic realizations), but in the simplified phonological notation between /slashes/ that contains also non phonetic elements, such as the syllable breaks, and some conventional notations for optional sounds.
Technical notes
- This symbol (IPA #509) has been encoded as a character in Unicode, U+203F (Undertie, Greek enotikon) and is used by linguists, see : http://linguistlist.org/unicode/ipa.html
- The liaison symbol is not a diacritic, but is a symbol replacing a regular space. It is not to be confused with U+035C (Combining double breve below), a non-spacing symbol.
- Some computers might not have any font installed necessary to display this character correctly, it might be missing or poorly represented. See Help:Multilingual support.
- It could be possible to substitute it using the syntax
{{subst:liaison}}; however, given that this template does not use any parameter, it can be left in its pre-parsed within the MediaWiki templates caches, so it will have a very minor impact on performance (it will be parsed only once even if pages are built using it multiple times). Due to the very low cost, and to the fact that the Wiki code will be easier to read, edit and maintain, it is probably better to not substitute the template and leave it as a template invocation.
