Article is long enough and in date, nothing particularly troubling on the copyvio detector. QPQ has been done. The picture seems free use and would be a great lead image! Sorry for the following screed, but I hope I can set out my issues clearly and that will make them easy to fix:
- The quotes in the 'sources' section of the DYK template are not from the Japan Times, but rather from the article itself. And on closer inspection the article diverges from the source material on occasion. For example the article says "Miyake underwent basic training including karate sport..." but the source says she had done karate in college and makes no mention of it as part of the basic training. The article says "She experienced self-reliance after the thankful acceptance by the audience" but the source says "It was the first time she was thanked for singing a song and the experience taught her “what it means to sing for people as a member of the SDF" - where has the experience of self-reliance come from? Phrases like "Her clear voice and lovely look earned her the nickname "Diva of the JMSDF Band"" are in the sources, but are problematic to write in wikipedia's voice, something like "Sync Music Japan has stated that "Her neat and lovely looks and clear voice has attracted fans, earning her the title, “Diva of the Japan Maritime Self-Defense Force Band”.", or just "she has been termed the “Diva of the Japan Maritime Self-Defense Force Band”". Some parts could use tweaking for clarity. Does "would better sing them in a classical way" mean that she would prefer to sing them classically, or that she feels she would perform better singing them classically? As to the hook, the source states "She was about to give up on her dream when a professor suggested she apply to become a singer in the SDF." - she doesn't seem to have had the dream of being a "member of the military band", but that this was a means to an end for her dream of "singing on stage" - I'd reword to ALT1 to obviate this. Overall I think this is an interesting article, an enjoyable read, and there are only minor issues with the hook - the overall thrust of which I like - of all the attractions of joining an armed force, one doesn't tend to think of it being a good place for a singing career being one of them.
