Yacare caiman

[edit]
Yacare caiman
Yacare caiman
  • ... that although the yacare caiman (pictured) was headed towards extinction in the 1980s due to hunting, its current population of about 10 million? Source: https://www.nationalgeographic.com/magazine/2013/07/yacare-caiman/ "Thirty years ago the yacare caiman appeared to be heading for oblivion, ruthlessly hunted to supply a lucrative market for crocodilian leather" "Caiman numbers rebounded dramatically" "As many as ten million yacare caimans are estimated to live in the wetlands today"

General: Article is new enough and long enough
Policy: Article is sourced, neutral, and free of copyright problems
Hook: Hook has been verified by provided inline citation
Image: Image is freely licensed, used in the article, and clear at 100px.
QPQ: Done.

Overall: Recently expanded article about an interesting topic, with a catchy (IMO) hook - it is also great to hear about success stories in wildlife protection. The article is in order, the QPQ is done, and the image passes all criteria, so this is good to go. Applodion (talk) 23:54, 5 March 2019 (UTC)

@SkyGazer 512: I was looking to promote this but the statements in the article "This practice caused the caiman's population to drop in the millions and become close to extinction." and "This caused the population to increase significantly, with about 10 million specimens living in the wild as of 2013." are not entirely accurate or true to the source. The source says it "appeared to be heading for oblivion" which is not quite the same as being close to extinction, and 10 million figure refers to its population in the Pantanal alone. @Cwmhiraeth: Perhaps this rewording would solve the issue: ALT1"... that although the yacare caiman (pictured) was headed "for oblivion" in the 1980s due to hunting, its current population numbers into the millions?" Applodion (talk) 10:06, 11 March 2019 (UTC)
That hook, which I have labelled ALT1, would be OK but the article needs adjustment too. Cwmhiraeth (talk) 10:17, 11 March 2019 (UTC)
Hi Cwmhiraeth, thank you for your comments. Applodion reworded the "close to extinction" part of the hook in ALT1 great, imo, and I'll change the article accordingly. As for the 10 million figure, if it's actually talking about the Yacare caiman population in the Pantanal alone, that would mean the total population is at least 10 million, so couldn't we use "at least 10 million" for the hook instead of the more vague "millions"? Thanks, --SkyGazer 512 My talk page 13:59, 11 March 2019 (UTC)
I have now tweaked the article. We could try one of the following hooks; if neither of them can work I'd be fine with ALT1 as well.--SkyGazer 512 My talk page 14:06, 11 March 2019 (UTC)
  • ALT2: that although the yacare caiman (pictured) was "heading for oblivion" in the 1980s due to hunting, its current population is at least 10 million?
  • ALT3: that although the yacare caiman (pictured) was "heading for oblivion" in the 1980s due to hunting, its current population in the Pantanal wetlands alone is 10 million?
  • That seems OK. If Applodion approves one or both of these hooks, and gives it/them a tick, I will be able to promote it. Cwmhiraeth (talk) 19:20, 11 March 2019 (UTC)
@Cwmhiraeth: I think both are okay, but I prefer ALT2 as it seems more accessible due to being shorter / not including the location. Applodion (talk) 23:29, 11 March 2019 (UTC)
@Applodion: Thanks. Do you want to go ahead and add the approval tick so that Cwmhiraeth can promote this? Of course, there's no rush if you still have yet to fully review this again.--SkyGazer 512 My talk page 03:01, 12 March 2019 (UTC)
I think this time it should be alright ;-) Applodion (talk) 08:46, 13 March 2019 (UTC)
Thanks! Cwmhiraeth, do you want to promote ALT2 or one of the other hooks now?--SkyGazer 512 My talk page 14:26, 13 March 2019 (UTC)
