Vincent Figgins
- ... that when starting his business, Vincent Figgins needed help from the mysterious "Black Man"? "No one knew his address; but he was supposed to be a tall man, who came in a mysterious way occasionally, whose name no one knew, but he went by the sobriquet of 'The Black Man'. This old gentleman, a very clever mechanic, lived to be a pensioner on my father's bounty—gratitude is perhaps the better word. I knew him and could never understand the origin of his sobriquet, unless Black was meant for dark, mysterious, from the manner of his coming and going", from Remarks by Vincent Figgins II.
- ALT1:... that according to his son, Vincent Figgins started his business by teaming up with the mysterious "Black Man" to work for Oxford University Press?

- Comment: Promoted to GA status 27 July. The source been scanned and entire text made available by the Internet Archive (this links directly to the right page), which is cited in the article as citation 34. Entire text is typed up in the article as a blockquote. Source 38 and Source 39 which discuss the topic have also been scanned by Google Books and are available in snippet view. I'd be OK with any kind of hybrid of the phrasing of the alt 1/2 hooks.
