Taftanaz

[edit]

  • A new article that is long enough. Unfortunately it feels imbalanced - as the town is claimed to be over 3,000 years old it seems odd that only one paragraph relates to a time before the year 2000. Most of the content relates to the current conflict in Syria, which is going to be controversial. Each paragraph has a citation, but for reporting a situation that volatile I would advise citations for individual sentences. The claim that it was conquered by Thutmose III is not directly supported by its reference; the source specifically uses the word "perhaps."
In terms of the hook, the wording differs from the article where it is described as "likely of Hittite origin" as opposed to the hook's certainty. The article has an in-line citation to an offline source, so I will take it on good faith that the article wording is accurate. This is my first DYK review so a second opinion by a more experienced reviewer would be welcome. Road Wizard (talk) 00:26, 23 September 2012 (UTC)
Sorry for the late reply, I couldn't find much else on Taftanaz as far as history is concerned. The most possible explanation I have concerning the gap is that Taftanaz, like many of the ancient towns of the Middle East, hasn't been inhabited for centuries (or in this case millenia), and only recently (sometime during the Ottoman Era 1516-1917) has been resettled. Anyway, as the source says, it's not certain that Thutmose conquered it, which I will make clearer in the article. I don't think it's necessary to add an inline citation to every sentence; at the end of each paragraph and after the hook fact usually suffices including for a situation such as the ongoing uprising. I will add more news sources, however, to add credibility to the article. And, finally, I will alter the hook to reflect the article. Thanks for the review. --Al Ameer son (talk) 02:03, 27 September 2012 (UTC)
I had thought there was a sentence at the start of a paragraph that wasn't supported by the following citation but was mentioned in a second citation at the end of the paragraph. However I can't find it again so I may have just been confused. I have restored the hook above to the original text and copied your revision below as ALT 1. The new hook looks fine so I am almost ready to approve this one. I'll just give the article a final read through this evening to check that everything is okay. • I still think that the Thutmose III sentence could be worded a little better but that is a minor point and not related to the hook. The remaining citation issue has been resolved so this one is good to go with the ALT 1 hook. Road Wizard (talk) 05:00, 5 October 2012 (UTC)
