[edit]- *
... that the Empire of Japan considered Shinto to be "suprareligious"?
- ALT1:*
... the U.S. government created the term State Shinto to describe the Japanese Empire's ideology? - ALT2:*
... the term of State Shinto was first used only after the defeat of the Japanese Empire? - ALT3:* ... that Imperial Japan denied that Shinto was a religion?
- ALT4:* ... that during the period of state control known as State Shinto, Japan actually lost 80,000 Shinto shrines?

- Comment: I'd like to describe this fact in a way that doesn't seem controversial, so please help choose the most neutral phrasing!

- Other problems: - I don't really like any of these hooks. The first is confusing, as I, and therefore I'm assuming most readers, don't know what is meant by "suprareligious." I guess ALT 1 and ALT 2 are okay, though not that interesting. Perhaps write a hook about how controversial the term is, or that the definition of the term is unclear. I think the article does a good job of presenting the subject neutrally, so I'm confident that you can find a good hook on the matter.

Overall: See my comments about the proposed hooks. Also, the article seems confused in that it establishes how controversial the term "State Shinto" is and how some scholars question whether an actual State Shinto existed but then uses the term as though the ideology were a concrete practice. Lastly, I commend the writing in this line as very well-done: "The state was thus able to enshrine its place in civic society in ways religions could not. [emphasis added]" --3family6 (Talk to me | See what I have done) 04:37, 10 February 2016 (UTC)
- Thanks User:3family6. I've added two hooks, what do you think? Maybe a bit more compelling? Also, thanks for the comments on the article. There's widespread academic consensus on the term "State Shinto," but it is controversial among nationalists in Japan; the rest of the article references what we see in most academic literature available in English in the topic. I've adapted the language to reflect that the minority viewpoint is being included, but not overemphasized. Thanks again! Owlsmcgee (talk) 05:17, 12 February 2016 (UTC)
- The article looks a lot better, nice job! And both of those hooks are interesting. Approved for both, I'll let the prep builder decide.--3family6 (Talk to me | See what I have done) 04:07, 12 February 2016 (UTC)
