Stanley Stair
- ... that at 107 years old, Stanley Stair (pictured) of Jamaica was the last surviving veteran of the British West Indies Regiment? Source: Please see the very bottom of this Guardian article which was appended on 11 December 2008; it's also mentioned by Ian Hislop in "Soldiers of Empire", an episode in the Channel 4 series "Not Forgotten" (2009)

- Comment: Article expansion started on 19 June 2022. (Still needs to survive AfD process.)
5x expanded by Cielquiparle (talk) and Polycarpa aurata (talk). Nominated by Cielquiparle (talk) at 07:06, 26 June 2022 (UTC).
- I am aware that this article is currently at AFD, though it looks like the article will be kept (as AFD consensus looks like it will be keep or no consensus). This nomination cannot be formally marked as a pass until the AFD is closed, and if the AFD is closed as delete, then obviously this DYK nom will be rejected. Nevertheless, I will proceed with a review of the article:
- According to the DYKcheck tool, article has been 5x expanded, and is over 1500 characters (3156 characters), and has been nominated in time (expansion started 19 June, nominated 26 June, which is exactly 7 days later, so fine). Article is within policy (NPOV, well sourced, no copyright violations detected)
- Hook is short enough, interesting, in the article and well cited
- QPQ done
- Overall, from a DYK perspective, I see no issues with the article. However, the AFD needs to be closed before I can add the DYK tick to this nomination. Assuming the AFD keeps the article, then I will come back here to add the DYK tick to this nomination. Joseph2302 (talk) 15:43, 28 June 2022 (UTC)
- on Joseph's behalf, I've added a tick following the AfD's close as keep. This shouldn't preclude me from promoting the nom later. theleekycauldron (talk • contribs) (she/they) 07:33, 9 July 2022 (UTC)
- Thanks to all. Coming back to this now, I've edited the image caption slightly to say "World War I veteran Stanley Stair" which I think is better than just "Stanley Stair, World War I" as I think the sources imply that the photo is from WWI but it's not explicit. (One footnote in case anyone is tempted to edit either the hook or the caption at a later stage: We avoid using the word "fought" with regard to his service and use the word "served" instead, as the British West Indies War Regiment wasn't technically allowed to "fight", which is a huge topic in the Ian Hislop "Soldiers of Empire" episode.) @Cielquiparle and Polycarpa aurata: The image needs a US public domain tag, as the servers that host these images are in the US. A list of these tags can be found by clicking here. Can you select the correct one and add it to the image page? Thanks. Z1720 (talk) 16:43, 28 July 2022 (UTC)
- Done! Polycarpa aurata (talk) 17:01, 28 July 2022 (UTC)
