Sporting Life (American newspaper)

[edit]

September 10, 1910 front page of Sporting LIfe

  • ... that the masthead of Sporting Life (1910 issue pictured) displayed the motto "Devoted To Base Ball, Trap Shooting and General Sports"?

Created/expanded by Cbl62 (talk). Self nom at 07:29, 30 June 2012 (UTC)

  • Article was sufficiently expanded, ~179 B to 1556 B. Article is over 1500 minimum.
  • Cited inline
  • Hook is brief and properly formatted
  • Image is PD, pre 1923 in US, used in article, decent at 100x100
Review will continue later. Chris857 (talk) 19:01, 2 July 2012 (UTC)
  • Question, what was the intent with "Henry Chadwick, sometimes called the "father of baseball, was a regular contributor to the Sporting Life."? It has an unclosed quote. Also, what is its reference? Chris857 (talk) 22:47, 2 July 2012 (UTC)
  • Intent was to identify one of the publication's most prominent contributors. Sources added. Cbl62 (talk) 03:18, 3 July 2012 (UTC)

___________

  • I detect no copyvio in sources available to me
Other Issues
  • The ref for the circulation of 40,000 reads like it was about 1890, not 1900
  • I have fixed the year at 1886 and added more precise sourcing. Cbl62 (talk) 03:12, 3 July 2012 (UTC)
  • I would like a ref for the publishing years, and I don't see any corroborating the 1922 to 1924 period (1883 to 1917 is verified)
  • Sources added. Cbl62 (talk) 03:03, 3 July 2012 (UTC)
  • Ref 2 by Bill Burgess is a forum post. Why is it reliable, or is it redundant or replaceable?
  • Bill Burgess is one of the most respected researchers on baseball history. He is affiliated with SABR and has been referred to as the "Baseball Guru." He has been cited as a source and research aide in several published books on baseball history, including these: this, this, this, this, this, this, and this. Cbl62 (talk) 02:43, 3 July 2012 (UTC)
  • Is this magazine called Sporting Life, or the Sporting Life, or The Sporting Life?
  • Officially, it's Sporting Life, and that's what the masthead says, but in baseball circles it's often referred to as the Sporting Life. Cbl62 (talk) 02:43, 3 July 2012 (UTC)

Alright, the article is up to snuff for me. Once QPQ is satisfied, this article will pass. Chris857 (talk) 03:20, 3 July 2012 (UTC)
