Sarai Gonzalez

[edit]
  • ... that her spunky performance in the "Soy Yo" music video has turned 11-year-old Sarai Gonzalez into a Latina icon? Source: "In record time, she had gone from unknown little girl to Latina icon, all thanks to a viral music video: Sarai is the nerdy, round and confident tween who confronts bullies on the streets of Brooklyn in the video for "Soy Yo" or "That's Me," by the Colombian group Bomba Estéreo." (The New York Times)

  • Comment only Using "spunky" in connection with an 11-year-old girl seems an unfortunate choice. Could we perhaps trim that word? Edwardx (talk) 23:55, 6 November 2016 (UTC)
  • @Edwardx: I always respect your opinion, but I don't understand the point you're making. Yoninah (talk) 09:17, 7 November 2016 (UTC)
  • Yoninah, now I think about it, it's not really an issue in American English, but in the UK at least, spunk is widespread slang for semen. There also appear to be issues for Australia, "A sexually attractive person": OxfordDictionaries.com definition of spunk. Edwardx (talk) 10:42, 7 November 2016 (UTC)
  • Interesting. Full review needed. Yoninah (talk) 22:18, 7 November 2016 (UTC)
  • I would suggest using "sassy" instead, since it's clean according to Oxford (does anyone know of other colloquial language issues?) and it's used in one of the refs to describe her. I will make the change in the article as well as in the revised DYK below. Mary Mark Ockerbloom (talk) 20:54, 8 November 2016 (UTC)
  • ALT1 ... that her sassy, self-confident performance in the "Soy Yo" music video has turned 11-year-old Sarai Gonzalez into a Latina icon? Source: "In record time, she had gone from unknown little girl to Latina icon, all thanks to a viral music video: Sarai is the nerdy, round and confident tween who confronts bullies on the streets of Brooklyn in the video for "Soy Yo" or "That's Me," by the Colombian group Bomba Estéreo." (The New York Times). For "sassy", see ref
  • Yes, that's a good choice. I also added "self-confident" to the hook and article. Yoninah (talk) 20:59, 8 November 2016 (UTC)
  • Full review still needed. BlueMoonset (talk) 22:09, 12 December 2016 (UTC)
  • I've used up my free views of NY Times, so I'll AGF that hook source. Other sources check out. New enough at time of nomination, long enough, hook is interesting. No copyvios/close paraphrasing. Good to go!--3family6 (Talk to me | See what I have done) 16:21, 21 December 2016 (UTC)
