Salt Wells Pilot Plant
[edit]- ... that on two occasions aircraft carrying explosives from the Salt Wells Pilot Plant were struck by lightning? Source: "Air shipment appeared to be feasible. Security, time in transit, and control were greatly superior to rail deliveries. The Air Force was asked to plan for and carry out air shipment. They scheduled from the Fairfield Sui Sun Air Base, using C-54-aircraft. After establishment of the system and trial runs, a remarkably steady operation was initiated and maintained without fail for more than four years. Not without incidents, however--twice C-54's loaded with high explosives were struck by lightning on the desert run to Albuquerque." (Robinson, p. 11) (offline)

- New enough. Long enough. QPQ done. Page is well-sourced and has no policy violations. No Copyvio issues. Hook is cited and interesting. Looks G2G! DaltonCastle (talk) 01:12, 19 December 2016 (UTC)
