Robert Gill

[edit]

Ajanta cave painting by Robert Gill

  • ... that Robert Gill was the first person to make copies (pictured) of the Ajanta caves murals after their rediscovery in the 19th century?
  • alt 1... that Robert Gill was the first westerner to make copies (pictured) of the Ajanta caves murals after their rediscovery in the 19th century?

Created/expanded by Shivashree (talk), Johnbod (talk), Bigturtle (talk), 7&6=thirteen (talk). Nominated by Shivashree (talk) at 03:26, 26 October 2012 (UTC)

  • Replacing image with a crop, which looks better. Feel free to revert. The ref does not says that "Gill was the first person - after their rediscovery in 1819 - to make extensive copies of the Buddhist cave paintings." It only says that of the two sets of paintings available in V&A. Gill was the earliest. --Redtigerxyz Talk 09:43, 26 October 2012 (UTC)
I would like credit as a co-creator, please. Did extensive rewrite, fixed all the citations. 7&6=thirteen () 23:56, 26 October 2012 (UTC)
As per current info in the article, Gill was not the first. The hook can be changed to the "first Westerner", if you have such a reference. --Redtigerxyz Talk 05:55, 27 October 2012 (UTC)
I propose alt 1. Please include me as a cocreator. I have left a message at the nominator's page. 7&6=thirteen () 11:15, 27 October 2012 (UTC)
We do not have a ref supporting it currently, also not in the article. --Redtigerxyz Talk 11:25, 27 October 2012 (UTC)

I will be on a wikibreak for today and tomorrow, going off right now. Do some research and add ref to you alt hook. Or you suggest another hook about his paintings burnt in fire etc or what you would find catchy. I won't mind you being a co-creator. Thanks! Shivashree (talk) 11:22, 27 October 2012 (UTC)

Gill was the first to do "extensive copies". Will add more refs to this effect on Monday. But hook arguably not the best anyway. Johnbod (talk) 01:50, 28 October 2012 (UTC)
  • ALT2... that Robert Gill spent 15 years in India copying (pictured) the painted murals of the Ajanta Caves, but most of his work was destroyed in two fires in London? - bit more hooky. Johnbod (talk) 04:28, 30 October 2012 (UTC)
Please add Johnbod and Bigturtle as co-contributors. If it doesn't create a conflict. If it does, then never mind. I was not trying to stir up a hornet's nest. There were real contributions that should be recognized, and this is not a zero sum game. 7&6=thirteen () 13:47, 30 October 2012 (UTC)
ALT2 is good. Everything else is ok. --Redtigerxyz Talk 17:53, 30 October 2012 (UTC)
I and User: Bigturtle would like credit as a co-contribuor, please. and Thank you. Please fix DYK make. 7&6=thirteen () 18:26, 30 October 2012 (UTC)
Done co-contributor credits listed. If you have this problem again, 7&6=13, just refer to the edit screen of this template to see how it was added. It's OK for you to add it yourself.— Maile (talk) 23:43, 30 October 2012 (UTC)
Well you should always ask the original nom(s) first, as he did. Johnbod (talk) 02:29, 31 October 2012 (UTC)
Ask of whom? There is no ownership of articles at Wikipedia. Courtesy is always a good thing here. In this particular one, the editor asked several times and got no response. The nomination was already approved for promotion - and still no response. In such a case, with the article's history as a backup, I would think it's OK for the editor to step in and add themselves before it goes to promotion and "do not edit this page" stage. — Maile (talk) 11:38, 31 October 2012 (UTC)
Ask the original nom(s), as I said. There is a certain ownership of nominations. Johnbod (talk) 14:27, 31 October 2012 (UTC)

I did, and he gave consent. I just didn't know the full protocol, or I would have indicated that on this page. This is a moot point, but it does illustrate how to handle this in the future. Thank you and Happy editing! 7&6=thirteen () 14:56, 31 October 2012 (UTC)
