  • ... that the Thai mining town of Pilok (location pictured) was so remote that its ore had to be transported by elephant? Source: "Before construction of a 60-kilometer road from Tha Khanon, a village on the Burma-Thailand railroad, to the river Khwae Noi, the ore was shipped from the district by elephants, which are still used for transport at Song Khwae in the southeast end of the district." • ALT1:... that the mines of Pilok, Thailand, were abandoned (equipment pictured) following the global tin market crash of 1985? [2]. See also [3] for English coverage.
    • ALT2:... that deep in the forest of Pilok, Thailand, Auntie Glen (pictured) operates a guesthouse out of a former mine? Source: [4]

  • Comment: Image is admittedly not the best at thumbnail—you can't really even see the village, but that's kind of the point. It's in the middle of the jungle. / Update: I've added a second image for ALT1. / Update: and ALT2.

  • Article is new enough, long enough, adequately sourced, and free from plagiarism. Offline/paywalled/Thai sources accepted in good faith. QPQ provided. Personally I don't find ALT2 that interesting (seems more like a tourist advert than a DYK hook). ALT1 is fine, but ALT0 is very interesting and quirky and would probably attract readers; as such, ALTs 1 and 2 are struck and ALT0 is approved, ideally either for a picture or quirky slot.
