Peter Patton (basketball)
- ... that Peter Patton was given the nickname General Patton by the father of his college coach?

- Comment: 1st of 2 QPQs for this nomination
Created by TonyTheTiger (talk). Self-nominated at 19:36, 25 February 2024 (UTC). Post-promotion hook changes for this nom will be logged at Template talk:Did you know nominations/Peter Patton (basketball); consider watching this nomination, if it is successful, until the hook appears on the Main Page.
- The hook fact is contradicted in the article which states he was in 6th grade at a camp when he got the nickname. I notice no source was provided here either. Is there discrepancy among sources on the origin of the nickname? Was the camp coach the father of his college coach? It doesn't say so if that is case. If so that needs to be addressed in the article. The hook fact needs to be clearly stated in the article with an inline citation. Once a viable hook is proposed, I will do a complete review.4meter4 (talk) 19:14, 22 March 2024 (UTC)
- User:4meter4 the article also gives the name of the person who ran the camp.-TonyTheTiger (T / C / WP:FOUR / WP:CHICAGO / WP:WAWARD) 19:23, 22 March 2024 (UTC)
- TonyTheTiger It does, but makes no explicit claim of any familial connection between the camp runner and the college coach. The hook fact must be explicitly stated with an inline citation. We don't accept inferred hooks.4meter4 (talk) 19:32, 22 March 2024 (UTC)
- Can I just add (son of Ray Meyer) to the article?-TonyTheTiger (T / C / WP:FOUR / WP:CHICAGO / WP:WAWARD) 19:54, 22 March 2024 (UTC)
- Unfortunately, no. I have had two hooks pulled from the Queue when I allowed something like this to go through in other reviews in the past. (not my articles; ones that I reviewed) Based on those experiences being over ruled, the hook fact has to be in the article in a single location with an inline citation using the language (or very close to the language) of the hook. It can't be inferred by pulling together facts dispersed through the article.4meter4 (talk) 20:15, 22 March 2024 (UTC)
- How is it now?-TonyTheTiger (T / C / WP:FOUR / WP:CHICAGO / WP:WAWARD) 21:15, 22 March 2024 (UTC)
- @TonyTheTiger Looks better. Assuming good faith on the subscription access sources for the hook fact. The hook is ready now. Unfortunately hit another snag in doing a full review. The article expansion is new enough. However, it looks like the article is just short of 5xs. The original character count was 1039 character of prose making the required prose size for 5x expansion 5195 characters. The current prose count is 5120 characters which is 75 characters short. Hopefully some more research may yield enough content to reach the required expansion size through a little more writing. One or two sentences should probably push you over the required amount of prose. If not, I suggest trying for a Good Article review and resubmitting once that is achieved. I suggest including a chronological time frame in the lead in order to help reach the prose goal. 4meter4 (talk) 05:21, 26 March 2024 (UTC)
- Butting in from Tony's talk page to say I think it's somewhat silly to hold up an otherwise-decent expansion DYK over 75 characters. Honestly, I don't think it would break the system to just IAR this one. ♠PMC♠ (talk) 07:06, 26 March 2024 (UTC)
- @ Premeditated Chaos I'm already giving Tony a break on the length by backdating the character count to the article state on the 19th which was when the expansion truly began but is 24 hours before the nomination window (although he could have filed it under the 19th instead of doing so under the 20th). If I were a stickler and started on the 20th which is the nomination date, the 5x expansion would be 6445 characters. The current prose count is 5120 characters which is 1325 characters short. So I chose to bend the rules slightly while staying in the spirit of them by starting from the true expansion date which was 24 hours earlier to give Tony an easier time making up the shortfall. That seemed fair given the work he put in. 75 characters is a lot easier to take care of as opposed to 1325 characters.4meter4 (talk) 15:08, 26 March 2024 (UTC)

- The expansion started on 2/19 and was finished on 2/25. Before I started on the 19th this 1045 character version existed. 5x from there is 5225. I guess on the 25th it was only 4874. I think I was relieved that the AFD closed successfully and forgot about the exact character count. It seems to be 5005 right now. Let me mesage it to get the count right.-TonyTheTiger (T / C / WP:FOUR / WP:CHICAGO / WP:WAWARD) 03:28, 27 March 2024 (UTC)
