Manuel Torres (diplomat)
[edit]- ... that the first Colombian ambassador to the United States was nearly assassinated by the Spanish ambassador? Source: "Both before and after the attempt on Torres' life Sarmiento 'was very particularly patronized and favor'd by Onis,' an indication that the Spanish minister himself was the instigator of the plot." Charles Bowman, "Manuel Torres, a Spanish American in Philadelphia," p. 39
- ALT1:... that Manuel Torres died from overwork? Source: "Duane described the nature of his friend's illness as primarily asthma, aggravated by the harshness of Philadelphia winters: 'Severe application to his duties, and the desire to perform himself what is usually performed by amanuenses, were effects too severe for a frame naturally delicate.'" Ibid., p. 53

- I will review the article. Szzuk (talk) 17:37, 9 September 2018 (UTC)
- The article is new enough and long enough, earwig isn't detecting any copyvios or close paraphrasing, the refs are recorded properly with page numbers and correct bibliography, QPQ is not required, the article is well written and free of POV. I'd suggest the first paragraph of the lead was adjusted to reflect what makes him notable - and his earlier life was put in another paragraph. Some section intro's are un-referenced paragraphs, it may be that they don't need to be but I'd be uncertain of that, you should confirm they don't need to be referenced or reference them. Neither of the hooks are acceptable, ALT0 isn't supported by the ref, it says "indicates" the assassination attempt - whereas the hook presents it as fact, ALT1 isn't interesting to a broad audience. - I have reworded the lead. Every paragraph now has at least one citation. As for hook suggestions:
- ALT2:... that Manuel Torres' approach to diplomacy was to soothe and coax rather than to bully and insult?
- This should be obvious for a diplomat, in his case it was not. Is it desirable to precisely quote Adams?
- ALT3:... that Manuel Torres was the first foreign diplomat to die in the United States? Source: "In addition to being the first representative officially received from Latin America by the United States, Torres was the first foreign diplomat to die on North American soil since the establishment of United States independence." Bowman, "Manuel Torres in Philadelphia and the Recognition of Colombian Independence," p. 38. Kim Post (talk) 01:39, 10 September 2018 (UTC)
