Manuel Antonio de Rivas

[edit]
  • ... that the Franciscan friar Manuel Antonio de Rivas, who was tried for heresy (and accused of sodomy) in 1775 in Mexico, wrote the first science-fiction text in the Americas?

  • size, vintage and hook check out. Can't see any paraphrasing. Interesting hook. well done. Casliber (talk · contribs) 06:05, 20 August 2011 (UTC)

I've returned this from prep as the the claim that he wrote the first science-fiction text in the Americas is not cited and the accessible sources that mention it either call it proto-science fiction or retro-labelled science fiction and don't claim it was the first. Also, the claim that he was tried for sodomy is dubious: he was accused of sodomy but the accusation was dropped early in the proceedings. Yomanganitalk 16:45, 22 August 2011 (UTC)
I've tweaked the hook. Tried or accused, that's semantics, but it should be clear now. That his was the first SF text is cited in Dziubinskyj, and I've added a footnote to the claim. Thank you. Drmies (talk) 17:31, 22 August 2011 (UTC)
Fair enough. I've put it back in prep. I left out the parenthesised sodomy as it doesn't do much for the hook, but feel free to re-add it if you disagree. Yomanganitalk 17:39, 22 August 2011 (UTC)
Well, I think a friar, sodomy, heresy, and sci-fi is a winning combination, but I'm not about to go to war over it. Thanks, Drmies (talk) 19:19, 22 August 2011 (UTC)
