Maja e Thatë

[edit]

Northwest view of Maja e Thatë (2406 m) in the Albanian Alps

  • Informative little article, good coverage, nice image. AGF for non-English refs. One confusion I have is the emphasis on the mountain's altitude relative to the nearest village. While topographical prominence is important in mountain geography, I'm not sure altitude relative to human habitations is an important factor. You have it stated as "exceptional" in the lede, is it really exceptional? Exceptional for the region, maybe? 1500m above the nearest town would place hundreds if not thousands of peaks in my home range in Canada at or above this level of relative altitude. • Just noticed you are the photographer for the image - double bonus points! The Interior (Talk) 17:59, 8 April 2012 (UTC)
Really thank you for the review (and for the bonus :)). Actually, its realtive altitude is a fact to be mentioned, since in the short article for Maja e Thatë, in the Albanian Encyclopedic Dictionary of 1985, this characteristic occupies a whole sentence (1 out of 7 in total). If a few peaks like Maja e Rosit let's say weren't found on its very same massif, then Maja e Thatë might have been an Ultra prominent peak. If you find the statement to be a little exaggerated or "peacock" you can state it differently, but I believe it's important. The mountain is surrounded by a deep and narrow valley in its south (Valbonë), maybe I can add another picture from the village's altitude. Empathictrust (talk) 18:05, 8 April 2012 (UTC)
How about we just remove "exceptionally"? I'll accept that your sources found it notable. The Interior (Talk) 18:12, 8 April 2012 (UTC)
That's OK! Just fine without it, you can remove "exceptionally"! Empathictrust (talk) 18:19, 8 April 2012 (UTC)
One last note - the lede mentions climbing and moutaineering, but the body doesn't expand on it. Do your sources have anything on established routes that climbers use, first recorded ascent, etc.? (not necessary for DYK pass) The Interior (Talk) 18:33, 8 April 2012 (UTC)
  • AGF for referencing and paraphrasing as refs are almost all non-English. Support using this as lead hook - quality article with beautiful public domain image. The Interior (Talk) 18:27, 8 April 2012 (UTC)
As a matter of fact, I haven't found yet any written source about mountaineering and established route till now. Written at least, since I have been told by professional mountaineers that a mountain climber has died in 1986 trying to climb this summit, while it was climbed after an year by two other Albanian professional mountain climbers. I hope I will find some written facts, or an old picture of that time, than write the names and expand the lede information. Empathictrust (talk) 11:31, 9 April 2012 (UTC)
