Lilian Bland

[edit]
  • ... that the first woman to design and build her own aircraft – Lilian Bland (pictured) – flew it using a whisky bottle and an ear trumpet?
  • ALT2: ... that Lilian Bland (pictured) was the first woman to design and build her own aircraft, in 1910, but gave up flying when offered a motorcar instead?

Moved to mainspace by Andrew Davidson (talk). Nominated by Andrew Davidson (talk) at 00:35, 20 November 2013 (UTC).

  • Getting back to this, I see that the nom wasn't included in the list for the day. I thought there was a bot that did this? Anyway, I'll be attending to any loose ends this afternoon at an editathon. Andrew Davidson (talk) 08:22, 4 December 2013 (UTC)
  • Amongst those loose ends is the absence of a QPQ.--Launchballer 13:55, 4 December 2013 (UTC)
  • Suggested rewording of hook:
  • ALT1: ... that Lilian Bland (pictured), the first woman to design and build her own aircraft, flew it using a whisky bottle and an ear trumpet? Yoninah (talk) 20:33, 7 December 2013 (UTC)
  • I'll go with Alt1. History thread shows when moved to mainspace. Length fine. Image is fine. Accepting book source in good faith, it has a page number that can be verified by someone who has a copy of it. I removed the empty section. No copy vios. - AnakngAraw (talk) 13:49, 8 December 2013 (UTC)

I think a QPQ still needs to be done for this nomination? The image license also looks as if it needs to be double checked as it has a 'possibly un-free' template? SagaciousPhil - Chat 17:30, 8 December 2013 (UTC)

  • Apologies for the delay but I've been snowed under lately. Here's the outstanding responses:
  1. I've just done a QPQ and will do a couple more as interest on the debt.
  2. I'm not sure what to do about the image. Its age ought to make it public domain but none of the many news media which published on the anniversary of the flight gave details. I was planning to visit the BL to view the book about the subject which may shed more light on it but haven't had the time.
  3. About the hook. I wrote the first one to put the bold link to the article in the middle. My thinking was that putting the name at the start would reduce the chances of a click-through as the reader would have to return to the start of the sentence after the hook sunk in.

Andrew, thanks for such a fast response to the message I left on your talk page. I had only looked at the nomination as a double check for another QPQ; I'm quite happy to pick up the review and see it through to completion providing none of the previous reviewers wish to finalise the review themselves and so may disapprove or raise objections to me doing it. I'll check back in the morning. SagaciousPhil - Chat 23:30, 8 December 2013 (UTC)
  • Just noting that although two (very much appreciated) QPQs have been carried out, the nomination is still on hold until the image situation is clarified. The article creator (Andrew Gray) is aware and checking . SagaciousPhil - Chat 15:36, 9 December 2013 (UTC)
  • My comments elsewhere - I am reasonably confident it had a contemporary publication, but can't prove it. (I didn't upload the image.) The hook was in error, though (it's not clear, but the whisky bottle was probably a temporary expedient during testing) so I've replaced it. Andrew Gray (talk) 22:59, 9 December 2013 (UTC)
  • Striking ALT1 hook (much like the original), and labeling the new hook ALT2. ALT2 will need to be reviewed before this can be approved, in addition to the image situation needing to be clarified. BlueMoonset (talk) 20:24, 10 December 2013 (UTC)
I am not comfortable with the sourcing of the hook. The year is sourced, the bit about the car is sourced but the bit about her being the 'first' - there are two sources in the paragraph but neither of them are next to the hook sentence, so I have absolutely no idea which source sources it.--Launchballer 22:49, 10 December 2013 (UTC)
Everything but the last sentence is cited to Lewis. I've clarified the punctuation but don't feel it's appropriate to footnote every single sentence.
As for the image, feel free to remove it if you feel it's not suitable - I didn't upload it, and I don't think anyone commenting here is able to prove its status one way or another. Andrew Gray (talk) 19:11, 11 December 2013 (UTC)
Thank you. I have no further issue with this article - approved.--Launchballer 21:57, 11 December 2013 (UTC)
