Joss Whedon
[edit]- ... that among Joss Whedon's (pictured) TV series are Buffy the Vampire Slayer, Angel, Firefly and Dollhouse?
- Reviewed: Not a self-nomination
Improved to Good Article status by RealGrayLogan (talk). Nominated by Oceanh (talk) at 19:02, 3 August 2014 (UTC).
- Great article. Well sourced. Comprehensive. Definitely long enough. New enough. However, the hook is a bit bland for someone unfamiliar with his work. You could perhaps change it to something more exciting and accessible to a less Whedon-aware audience (something about his feminism or themes?). --EvanRo (talk) 19:44, 6 August 2014 (UTC)
- Thank you for the review. Below is an alternative hook. Oceanh (talk) 21:28, 7 August 2014 (UTC)
ALT1 ... that Joss Whedon's (pictured) films and TV series feature themes like existentialism, anti-authoritarianism, power, powerlessness, sexuality, adulthood, sacrifice, misogyny and feminism?
ALT2 ... that when Joss Whedon (pictured) asked himself why he writes such strong female characters, he said "Because you're still asking me that question"?
- Thank you for the review. Below is an alternative hook. Oceanh (talk) 21:28, 7 August 2014 (UTC)
- I originally was thinking "when Joss Whedon was asked why ...", but the text in the article doesn't quite say that. The relevant cite does, but I remember watching the speech and it was self referential. Of course, he's probably said it elsewhere as well. This way it matches the article though. - New reviewer needed to look at the hooks. Also, there's nothing in the original review about neutrality or close paraphrasing checks, so those should also be checked. BlueMoonset (talk) 20:05, 8 September 2014 (UTC)
- All the hooks meet length requirements. The primary hook is sourced although if you don't know Joss Whedon you probably never heard of those TV shows, either. ALT1 is not supported in the citations. ALT2 is sourced to themarysue.com, which I'm not sure is a reliable source. ALT2 could be re-worded "when asked why..., Joss Whedon replies..." The article had been recently approved as GA. The article appears to be within policy. Apart from the numerous mirrors that also display this content I don't see any evidence of close-paraphrasing. - Thanks for the review. I struck alt1, since it can not be directly verified from the citations. Reworded alt2 as alt2B below, as suggested. Else, I don't quite understand the objections to the original hook, since all four TV series link to rather comprehensive articles (Firefly is even FA). [By the way, I never heard of those TV shows before myself]. Oceanh (talk) 20:47, 15 September 2014 (UTC)
- ALT2B: ... that when asked why he writes such strong female characters, Joss Whedon (pictured) replies, "Because you're still asking me that question"?

- Like Chris troutman, I'm dubious about themarysue.com site, not least of which is due to the meaning of Mary Sue. Whether it's reliable, between its owner (an ABC co-anchor of Nightline) on the plus side, and its worrying disclaimer, I'd leave to the reliable sources noticeboard to opine on. However, rather than use that source, wikiquote lists that Whedon quote and gives its source (which in turn gives its context, a speech in which he gives many answers to that one question); it was an "Equality Now Tribute Address" in 2006, and the video and transcript are here. BlueMoonset (talk) 18:05, 18 September 2014 (UTC)
- I'd support ALT2B with the new sourcing. I want to emphasize the primary hook is fine. I was only questioning how interesting it would be to the audience that doesn't know Joss Whedon's work. Frankly, I'm stunned by people that know Whedon from Avengers but not Buffy or Dollhouse. Chris Troutman (talk) 18:59, 18 September 2014 (UTC)
- Oceanh, the ball's in your court now. BlueMoonset (talk) 16:34, 20 September 2014 (UTC)
- Thank you for finding a better source. I have added this reference to the article, as an inline citation for the quote. Oceanh (talk) 17:33, 20 September 2014 (UTC)
- I've used that reference on the boxquote at the beginning of the section, rather than the HuffPost ref which just had the embedded video. I've also made a slight copyedit of the re-referenced sentence, since I've removed the themarysue.com source due to reliability concerns, which lets out their interpretation of events (and ALT2, which I've struck). Chris troutman, does this meet your needs to support ALT2B (or not 2B)? BlueMoonset (talk) 03:54, 21 September 2014 (UTC)
- Yes, ALT2B works for me. Chris Troutman (talk) 04:16, 21 September 2014 (UTC)
