John J. Ray III
- ... that insolvency professional John J. Ray III said that cryptocurrency exchange FTX was run by "a very small group of inexperienced, unsophisticated and potentially compromised individuals"? Source: "Ray is a Chicago lawyer known as the turnaround specialist who restructured mortgage lender Residential Capital, oil tanker company Overseas Shipholding and other large corporations. FTX failed in part because the company was "in the hands of a very small group of inexperienced, unsophisticated and potentially compromised individuals," he said in the court filings."

- This is just a comment but I wonder if a hook mentioning his past as Enron's chairman during their restructuring could also work out. Perhaps even a hook that puts together Enron and FTX? Narutolovehinata5 (talk · contributions) 07:41, 23 November 2022 (UTC)
- Actually I'll go ahead and propose a hook based on that:
- ALT1 ... that John J. Ray III, who previously served as chairman of Enron, said he had never before seen "such a complete failure of corporate controls" upon becoming CEO of FTX?
- ALT1a ... that John J. Ray III, previously chairman of Enron, said he had never before seen "such a complete failure of corporate controls" upon becoming CEO of cryptocurrency exchange FTX?
- Narutolovehinata5 (talk · contributions)
Thank you very much for your hooks. I like ALT1 but I think it is important to describe what FTX is as not every reader will be familiar.
ALT1b ... that John J. Ray III, who previously served as chairman of Enron, said he had never before seen "such a complete failure of corporate controls" upon becoming CEO of cryptocurrency exchange FTX? Thriley (talk) 13:44, 23 November 2022 (UTC)
- I was originally considering proposing something similar to ALT1b but such wording would have been just below 200 characters and thus be too long in my opinion. Narutolovehinata5 (talk · contributions) 01:03, 24 November 2022 (UTC)
What about: ALT1c ... that John J. Ray III, the chairman of Enron during its bankruptcy, said he had never before seen "such a complete failure of corporate controls" upon becoming CEO of cryptocurrency exchange FTX? I think it is good to mention he was the CEO during the bankruptcy. Thriley (talk) 01:19, 24 November 2022 (UTC)
- That's 193 characters so it's still quite long and in discretionary territory. Narutolovehinata5 (talk · contributions) 01:57, 24 November 2022 (UTC)
- Full review needed, including whether hook length is an issue. Thanks. BlueMoonset (talk) 02:25, 9 December 2022 (UTC)
Here are some general comments about the article, none are major issues:
- In the lead, probably should be described as "cryptocurrency exchange FTX". I'd also suggest something like "being appointed after its collapse", like how Enron is explained in the next sentence.
- See below regarding the "The son of a union plumber..." not mentioning the father's name.
- Chapter 11 bankruptcy should be wikilinked on first use
- In the final sentence, "...the company paid Ray a..." - isn't he still being paid by them? So shouldn't it be "is paying"?
And the checklist:
General: Article is new enough and long enough |
---|
Policy compliance:
- Adequate sourcing:
- Neutral:
- Free of copyright violations, plagiarism, and close paraphrasing: - "The son of a union plumber and his wife Florence" is pretty close to "The son of an industrial plumber and a stay-at-home mom" from the Chicago Tribune. I would suggest modifying that anyways to mention his dad's name.

Overall: I'm okay with the length given the timeliness and intersting-ness of the hook, it's such a damning quote. ALT1c is the best IMO. Legoktm (talk) 07:32, 15 December 2022 (UTC)
@Legoktm: Thank you for your review! I have fixed the issues up you brought up. Thriley (talk) 06:06, 16 December 2022 (UTC)
