Jack Whicher, The Suspicions of Mr Whicher
[edit]( Back to T:TDYK )
( Article history links: )
- ... that Victorian detective Jack Whicher was the inspiration for The Suspicions of Mr Whicher?

- The hook is the right length and referenced (maybe a sentence too late, but that's just being picky). The Jack Whicher article clearly qualifies for length, formatting, references, etc., but I have one hang-up - what some may think is plagiarism in one sentence. The exact and somewhat flowery words "arrived in Wiltshire with the nation’s hopes resting on his shoulders and quietly confident of success" are in the Daily Mail review cited immediately following. If it is meant as a quote it should be in quotation marks. I'll suggest not quoting it, just paraphrasing it in much less flowery terms, in which case the citation is enough to avoid plagiarism suspicions. I'll emphasize that this is likely to be viewed as a borderline case in some parts of the world, but fairly serious in other parts, and suggest that the author review the whole article for similar "hidden quotes."
- The Suspicions of Mr Whicher likely would not qualify on its own, due to much of the text being a list and plot synopsis (actually there are 2 sections of synopsis, which should be cleaned up). I don't see any reason to exclude The Suspicions however from the hook, other than a touch of cleanup. With some attention paid to the possible plagiarism issue, this should be passed pretty easily. - I think I have addressed the above concerns and have rewritten the disputed line. Jack1956 (talk) 18:45, 18 April 2013 (UTC)
