Gregory Merson
[edit]- ... that Gregory Merson made the final table of the 2012 World Series of Poker main event even though he is a shorthanded cash game specialist?

- Comment: (ALT1) ... that Gregory Merson made the final table of the 2012 World Series of Poker main event even though he only had 50,000 chips when the big blind was 20,000 chips?--TonyTheTiger (T/C/BIO/WP:CHICAGO/WP:FOUR) 20:45, 17 July 2012 (UTC)

- QPQ done. Fully supported by sources. (Non-cited lead fact found in article.) Article is neutral enough. No plagiarism concerns. Hook properly formatted. No images to check.
- Where is hooked fact found in the article? --LauraHale (talk) 02:22, 29 July 2012 (UTC)
- That he made the final nine is in current refs 13 and 14.--TonyTheTiger (T/C/BIO/WP:CHICAGO/WP:FOUR) 02:36, 29 July 2012 (UTC)
- Cash game ref 2.--TonyTheTiger (T/C/BIO/WP:CHICAGO/WP:FOUR) 02:39, 29 July 2012 (UTC)
- Shorthanded ref 3.--TonyTheTiger (T/C/BIO/WP:CHICAGO/WP:FOUR) 02:39, 29 July 2012 (UTC)
- Where is Final Nine or November Nine found in the article text? --LauraHale (talk) 02:40, 29 July 2012 (UTC)
- I think both list the final 9 players in the tournament.--TonyTheTiger (T/C/BIO/WP:CHICAGO/WP:FOUR) 02:43, 29 July 2012 (UTC)
- 20k and 50k chips at refs 9 and 10 respectively.--TonyTheTiger (T/C/BIO/WP:CHICAGO/WP:FOUR) 02:43, 29 July 2012 (UTC)
- I'm not checking sources until you quote me the text that supports the hook or tell me which table mentions November Nine final table at the 2012 World Series of Poker even though he only had 50,000 chips. Where is this found in the article? --LauraHale (talk) 02:52, 29 July 2012 (UTC)
- It is no longer being marketed as November nine. Notice that the hook is piped. Surely you see that he made the final 9.--TonyTheTiger (T/C/BIO/WP:CHICAGO/WP:FOUR) 03:07, 29 July 2012 (UTC)
- For the 50k, you have to notice the typo in "After all was said and done, Gonzalez had doubled to 3 million while Meson was left with just 50,000. Merson went on to double the very next hand, but he is still on an extremely short stack."--TonyTheTiger (T/C/BIO/WP:CHICAGO/WP:FOUR) 03:10, 29 July 2012 (UTC)
- Maybe this is because I do NOT understand poker winnings at all. Can you quote the article where it supports the hook? I just cannot find it. I'm honestly not trying to be difficult. Where in the article does it state this? Please quote the article as to where I can verify the hooked fact? --LauraHale (talk) 03:57, 29 July 2012 (UTC)
- Maybe you should step aside on this one.--TonyTheTiger (T/C/BIO/WP:CHICAGO/WP:FOUR) 04:43, 30 July 2012 (UTC)

Second opinion requested by some one who knows poker and can verify the hook fact being found in the article. --LauraHale (talk) 04:50, 30 July 2012 (UTC)
- I'll take over. For a start, ALT1 is sufficiently referenced, and every single statement is mentioned in the article. But while I do like the message in ALT1, I think the wording could be improved. Even knowing something about poker, I misread the hook in a way as if Merson was to play the final table with 50,000 chips, not that this beating happened 2 days earlier and he had long recovered. Why not simply:
- ALT2: ... that Gregory Merson made the final table of the 2012 World Series of Poker main event even though he was down to 2½ big blinds at one time? --Pgallert (talk) 15:08, 9 August 2012 (UTC)
- I think ALT2 is a lot harder for the average reader to WP:V than ALT1.--TonyTheTiger (T/C/BIO/WP:CHICAGO/WP:FOUR) 16:06, 9 August 2012 (UTC)
- Anyway, all three hooks are verified and occur in the article. I also checked length, date, and plagiarism again. Personally I find the original hook not very exciting, and ALT1 too bumpy, but maybe the closer wants to make a call. It's about poker, after all. --Pgallert (talk) 19:08, 10 August 2012 (UTC)
