Going Left Right

[edit]
  • ... that Department S' guitarist Mike Herbage has expressed his surprise at "Going Left Right", calling its chart placing "probably higher than it had any right to, really"?

5x expanded by Launchballer (talk). Self nominated at 01:16, 17 November 2013 (UTC).

  • The article was subject to a five-time expansion in the required time-period, but I'm concerned about the high amount of quotes in the article: well over half of the content is attributed inline quotes. I think a lot more of these could be paraphrased to create a much better article. Harrias talk 13:09, 9 December 2013 (UTC)
It was my understanding that only blockquotes - i.e., those over fourty words - were excluded? But I've cut down the longest ones.--Launchballer 13:52, 9 December 2013 (UTC)
  • Absolutely, DYK rules have nothing specific against it, but general Wikipedia guidelines, such as WP:QUOTE and WP:COPYVIO suggest minimising the use of direct quotations, and it would make the article read far more easily if more of the comments were paraphrased, rather than used directly. Harrias talk 16:53, 9 December 2013 (UTC)
How's it looking now?--Launchballer 22:28, 9 December 2013 (UTC)
  • Personally, I'm still not convinced, but I'd recommend someone else have a look at it and provide a second opinion. Harrias talk 14:42, 13 December 2013 (UTC)
Commendably rescued article by Launchballer (it was previously a single line stub) so that feat deserves a pat on the back. But I would agree there is more work to be done - the quotes, for example, need to be cited to the specific article (rather than the band's website page which provides the transcripts). And I don't think the band quotes arer suitable for the lede section - maybe they should be added to a renamed section called "Chart performance and critical reception"? I'm not even sure quotes from the band's guitarist are of any merit for DYK - we're normally interested here about what independent reviewers say about music releases, rather than what the band think! How about
Alt 1 ... that Department S's 1981 single "Going Left Right" has been described as "among the finest songs of the entire post-punk early '80s"? Sionk (talk) 17:30, 16 December 2013 (UTC)
Right, I can't find the Punks Reunited review, but that's because the site is undergoing an overhaul. All others have been found. Minor adjustment to the hook, so you can approve it:
ALT2: ... that Department S's sophomore single, Going Left Right, has been described as "stand[ing] among the finest songs of the entire post-punk early '80s"?
The talk page says 'stub'. Are we in agreement that that refers to its previous incarnation and it is now start-class?--Launchballer 11:36, 17 December 2013 (UTC)
  • I'd be inclined to recommend "second" instead of "sophomore", which will be a more widely understood word (I'm only aware of sophomore in relation to US college students). "stand[ing]" is just plain messy and unnecessary, I'd suggest scrapping it. Sionk (talk) 13:55, 23 December 2013 (UTC)
I used the word sophomore because the correct term for a second single that is not as successful as its predecessor is sophomore slump, as the article states. However, per your suggestion:
ALT3: ... that Department S's second single, "Going Left Right", has been described as "among the finest songs of the entire post-punk early '80s"?--Launchballer 14:47, 23 December 2013 (UTC)
Well, that satisfies me. Good to go! Sionk (talk) 16:09, 23 December 2013 (UTC)
  • Note: struck the earlier, unapproved hooks; added quotes around the song title for approved ALT3. BlueMoonset (talk) 02:52, 24 December 2013 (UTC)
Isn't a QPQ still required? SagaciousPhil - Chat 06:44, 24 December 2013 (UTC)
You're right; it is.  Done.--Launchballer 09:12, 24 December 2013 (UTC)
Thank you. Re-instating Sionk's tick. SagaciousPhil - Chat 09:20, 24 December 2013 (UTC)
