George F. Good Jr.
[edit]- ... that in World War II then-Colonel George F. Good Jr. was charged with defending Funafuti from 10 Japanese attacks with a mixed unit that was "poorly armed" and "stuck out like a sore thumb"? Source: (pg. 14) "Gen Good draws upon his experience as commander of the battalion from 14 November 1942 to 4 December 1944" - (pg. 14) "At Funafuti, this poorly armed force stuck out like a sore thumb" (pg. 12) "The battalion's commanding officer, Colonel George F. Good, Jr., recalled that his ragtag antiaircraft and ground defenses "stuck out like a sore thumb:' The Ellice Islands served as a staging area for raids on the Japanese-held Gilbert Islands and consequently bore the brunt of some 10 Japanese air attacks"
