Fugging

[edit]

Created by The C of E (talk). Self nominated at 10:35, 11 January 2014 (UTC).

  • Unsurprisingly, the article meets all the requirements, although I had to check whether it is long enough. It is new enough, properly sourced (including the hook), and contains no copyvios. QPQ done. I love how hooky the hook is! It is foreseeable that "an unknown reason" is actually known, and you just have to see what it is. Surtsicna (talk) 15:50, 11 January 2014 (UTC)
  • Rules for fools says that these joke DYK nominations have to be somewhat appropriate. Alexschmidt711 (talk) 19:55, 19 January 2014 (UTC)
  • What? And "Polish girls (pictured) are getting wet and spanked today, but will have their revenge tomorrow?" from last year is appropriate while this isn't? I do not understand why you have decided to override a green tick. The C of E God Save the Queen! (talk) 20:00, 19 January 2014 (UTC)
  • Which rule are you talking about? I am fairly prudish yet I see nothing inappropriate here, regardless of whether it is Aprils Fools Day or any other day. The town was originally called Fucking. That is a simple fact. Should we censor it? Of course not. Surtsicna (talk) 20:14, 19 January 2014 (UTC)
  • It is untrue that Fucking is now named Fugging. They are two separate towns in Austria. There was a satirical story that Fucking was fed up and wanted to change its name to Fugging. This satire was reported as straight news by the media but the mayor of Fucking denied the satire was true. See Fucking article for details, supported by citations. — O'Dea (talk) 20:57, 24 February 2014 (UTC)
  • · Woah woah woah! I think you're misreading it. This is not about Fucking, Austria, it is about the separate hamlet of Fugging. Also, what you mentioned is not part of the proposed DYK hook. The C of E God Save the Queen! (talk) 21:06, 24 February 2014 (UTC)
  • The mayor of Fucking denied the rumours, which arose from a satirical newspaper, so the hook here is false, since it is untrue that "Fucking was renamed Fugging for an unknown reason", as alleged. Fucking is still called Fucking. — O'Dea (talk) 21:16, 24 February 2014 (UTC)
  • Again, this is NOT about the village in Upper Austria, it is about the hamlet in Lower Austria that did change it's name in the 1800s. Yes, Fucking is still Fucking. But Fugging (in lower Austria) was renamed from Fucking. The C of E God Save the Queen! (talk) 21:18, 24 February 2014 (UTC)

The DYK nomination says:

DYK that Fucking was renamed Fugging for an unknown reason?

But the town of Fucking has not been renamed, and is not called Fugging. Fugging is a separate town.

The ALT version says:

DYK that in Austria, Fucking is now referred to as Fugging for some reason.

This is equally untrue, for the same reason.

A satirical website ran a story that the residents of Fucking were fed up with pranksters of various kinds so decided to change the name of Fucking to Fugging to "stop the craziness". Mainstream media took the story as a straight news report, so the story was picked up and repeated internationally. Finally, someone thought of telephoning Fucking and the mayor of the town (Fucking) denied the whole thing. At that point, it was noticed that the source of the story was a satirical website. By then, the damage was done, and many now believe that the town changed its name.

The source that claims that Fugging was once Fucking is part of the same mess. It is just not true. You need to revert your recent edits to both articles as the cited sources are misleading. — O'Dea (talk) 21:27, 24 February 2014 (UTC)

  • Again, Fugging (in Lower Austria which is what this hook is about, not Fucking in Upper Austria) was called Fucking before changing it's name in the 1800's. The parts relating to Fucking changing it's name may not be so, but the info about Fugging itself is still valid. An independent reviewer does not share your concerns when he reviewed this. I am prepared to take this to WT:DYK for a 4th opinion if you don't agree. The C of E God Save the Queen! (talk) 21:32, 24 February 2014 (UTC)

In the Fugging article, you are using an NBC report which itself is reporting parasitically on a now-discredited Daily Mirror report. The Mirror was quoting the satire. The whole thing is a mess; the satirical information virus has infected the media. The satirists must be laughing themselves sick at this point at the confusion. — O'Dea (talk) 21:37, 24 February 2014 (UTC)

  • It also uses Austria Times. The mirror report might only be discredited on Fucking changing it's name, but the parts about Fugging has not been discredited. I have changed the article to say that there were reports of it instead of it being definitive. Would you still object if I change the article to include that the name change proposal of Fucking (in Uppper Austria) was later mentioned as not true? If you would, I'll take it to WT:DYK. The C of E God Save the Queen! (talk) 21:42, 24 February 2014 (UTC)
  • I have to object because the Mirror story claiming that Fugging was once Fucking opens with the false story that Fucking wanted to rename itself. The story is thoroughly unreliable. The Austria Times also fell for the story that Fucking wanted to change its name, too: "Austrians considering renaming their village from Fucking to Fugging have been told to think again – because the name is already taken." But that is untrue. — O'Dea (talk) 21:55, 24 February 2014 (UTC)
  • OK, ill ask for a 4th opinion on WT:DYK. until then, probably best to leave the original review conclusion here. The C of E God Save the Queen! (talk) 21:58, 24 February 2014 (UTC)
  • The C of E, as this is your nomination, you should not be using any icon at all here, except possibly the "again" icon. Certainly not the tick, which is the approval icon. Once someone has interposed another icon, you cannot yourself take an earlier review and reimpose it. Calling for another pair of eyes at WT:DYK is a good idea, but don't leave this in a passing state. April Fools Day is over a month away; there should be plenty of time to settle this in the interim. BlueMoonset (talk) 07:49, 27 February 2014 (UTC)
@BlueMoonset: I already have made the request. The C of E God Save the Queen! (talk) 09:45, 27 February 2014 (UTC)
  • O'dea, you are objecting to all of these by saying they are "untrue". Do you have a source to support your own position? — Crisco 1492 (talk) 00:03, 7 March 2014 (UTC)
I don't think so because I believe he has Fugging and Fucking mixed up. The C of E God Save the Queen! (talk) 09:49, 7 March 2014 (UTC)
  • That's what it looks like. However, I note that he may be concerned with the second paragraph in "history of name". — Crisco 1492 (talk) 10:01, 7 March 2014 (UTC)
Also, the geocoords seem to be off. Maybe by about 400 m. — Crisco 1492 (talk) 10:04, 7 March 2014 (UTC)
  • Re-review needed; April Fools Day is ten days away. There's been no response from O'Dea in over two weeks. New reviewer should take a look at the two things Crisco mentions above. BlueMoonset (talk) 17:33, 22 March 2014 (UTC)
  • Crisco: The citations are in Fucking, and no, I have not confused the two towns. I know there are two of them, in different parts of the country. — O'Dea (talk) 03:04, 25 March 2014 (UTC)
The C of E, you need to fix Ref 1. It points to "Not Found". Other than that, yes the sources are about how the present town of Fucking wanted to change its name to Fugging. But they found out that a different Austrian town named Fucking changed its name to Fugging 100 years ago, and nobody remembers why it was changed. I believe the sources confirm your hooks. But please fix Ref 1 first. — Maile (talk) 00:16, 31 March 2014 (UTC)
Changed it to the archived version. The C of E God Save the Queen! (talk) 06:57, 31 March 2014 (UTC)
for sourcing in English, for sourcing in German. Most unfortunate this got sidetracked for such a long time because of confusion over the two different locales. I have read the sources that are in English, and The C of E's hooks are correct. This is good to go for April 1. — Maile (talk) 10:57, 31 March 2014 (UTC)
