Fredy Hirsch
[edit]- ... that Fredy Hirsch saved the lives of children at Auschwitz by impressing SS guards, even though he was Jewish and openly gay? Source:
For convincing guards to grant extra privileges to save children's lives, "Hirsch again made friends with guards who allowed the children to receive better food and to stay indoors for twice-daily roll calls."[1]- For openly gay, "Hirsch was a revered, openly gay Jewish youth leader who brightened the lives of kids at Theresienstadt and Auschwitz and saved many from death."[2]
- For impressing the guards," "The fact that Hirsch came from Germany, and his self-confident manner, meant that some SS members had a certain degree of respect for him."[3]
- ALT1:... that Fredy Hirsch gained the respect of some SS guards at Auschwitz, even though he was Jewish and openly gay?
- ALT2: ... that, according to one account, Fredy Hirsch was poisoned by a Jewish doctor in order to prevent him from leading a uprising at Auschwitz?[4][5]
- Reviewed: This is my third DYK nomination
- Comment: Personally, I think that the most interesting part of Hirsch's story was how he was able to influence, negotiate with, and even gain the respect of SS guards despite the fact that he represented most of what the Nazis were violently opposed to. "Impressing" might be putting it too strongly, so I would welcome alternative wording.

- @Flibirigit: Done ; birth date and location are in Stránský
- This Hebrew language source [6] is cited in the article stating that Hirsch used his influence with the Germans to save children's lives, since it is more reliable than the Jewish Virtual Library. Catrìona (talk) 00:42, 3 September 2018 (UTC)
- Thanks for the clarification. I see that PDF is 16 pages in length. Is it possible to add page numbers to the nineteen individual citations? It's a long document to read or put through google translation without knowing the page. I also notice there is an external link or title error in the "further reading" section to be fixed. Otherwise, everything else looks good to me. Flibirigit (talk) 01:10, 3 September 2018 (UTC)
- I fixed the title error. The PDF's pages are specified inline using the {{rp}} template. Catrìona (talk) 01:20, 3 September 2018 (UTC)
- Sorry, I forgot about the page numbers inline. Flibirigit (talk) 01:28, 3 September 2018 (UTC)
