England's difficulty is Ireland's opportunity
- ... that Irish republican O'Donovan Rossa claimed that those who said that "England's difficulty is Ireland's opportunity" used it as an excuse for inaction? [1]
- ALT1:... that the unwritten coda of "England's difficulty is Ireland's opportunity" was often "let's bide our time"? Source: "'England's difficulty is Ireland's opportunity' had long been a favourite motto with Irish nationalists of all shades, but in its usual formulation it was often employed with a coda: 'let's bide our time'."
- ALT2:... that Sir Henry Christopher Grattan-Bellew tried to rebrand the phrase "England's difficulty is Ireland's opportunity" in a "friendlier and more constitutional sense"? Source: New Ireland Review
- ALT3: ... that the motto "England's difficulty is Ireland's opportunity" "didn't always work successfully for the Irish"? Source: "It may have been the Fenians of the 19th century who coined the phrase (and practiced the philosophy) "England's difficulty is Ireland's opportunity." It didn't always work successfully for the Irish..." (Mckiernan, Eoin (1998). Irish America. Irish Voice, Incorporated. p. 62.)

- Other problems: - I like ALT0, ALT1 and ALT3 better. However, ALT0 isn't stated explicitly in the article. ALT1 and ALT3 are good as is, but may need attribution for the authors of these quotes. ALT2 is good to go, but I don't think it's as interesting as the other three. Let me know what you think.

Overall: epicgenius (talk) 22:42, 14 October 2019 (UTC)
- I think ALT0 is already in the text:
O'Donovan Rossa complained that anyone who employed the phrase was a "fraud" and actually used it as an excuse to do nothing
. If you want I could change "do nothing" to "inaction", but I would consider them synonymous. - I'm not sure ALT1 needs attribution; frequently quotes in DYK hooks run without for space reasons. It's not an extraordinary claim and it's printed in an a high-quality academic source.
- A version of ALT3 with attribution: ALT3b ... that an article in Irish America claimed that the motto "England's difficulty is Ireland's opportunity" "didn't always work successfully for the Irish"?

- @Fiamh: No problem. I didn't read closely and see that "inaction" and "do nothing" are synonyms. ALT1 is fine as is, in light of your comments. I'm approving ALT0, ALT1, ALT3b and ALT2, with a preference for the first three hooks. epicgenius (talk) 03:13, 15 October 2019 (UTC)
