Edward A. Geary
[edit]... that Edward A. Geary was unanimously elected Speaker of the Oregon House of Representatives after his rival for the position lost his bid for re-election?Source: Harold and News, 10 Jan 55, p. 1: "…Geary, Klamath Falls rancher was elected Speaker of the House. The vote was unanimous."; and Daily Capital Journal, 6 Nov 55, p. 1: "Several months ago, Baun announced the he had more than 40 pledges for the speakership, but his pledges proved of no value for the simple reason that Baum was defeated by Democratic nominee Wells…" (Baun was Geary's rival for speaker)

- Article is new, long enough, submitted in a timely fashion, hook is appropriately cited, hook length is under the limit, and there are no copyvio issues. Hook independently verified. No obvious grammatical or spelling problems, either. Good to go!! - Tim1965 (talk) 17:50, 9 October 2016 (UTC)
- Hi, I came by to promote this, but I just don't find it hooky. Would you like to suggest something else? Perhaps a play on his flying high (in a balloon company) during WWI and coming down to earth as a farmer? Yoninah (talk) 21:05, 13 October 2016 (UTC)
- ALT1:
… that Edward A. Geary was a balloon observation officer during World War I; then after the war he became a grass seed farmer and eventually Speaker of the Oregon House of Representatives?Source: Harold and News, 8 Jan 49, p. 4: "… Geary, Klamath basin rancher and grass seed grower … Served in US Army (2Lt lieutenant balloon company) 1917-1919. …” Also, Harold and News article above about being elected speaker.- I still like original DYK hook better. Given today’s political environment, I think a lot of readers would be interested in someone who was unanimous elected speaker by both Republican and Democratic peers. However, I’ll go with whatever you decide.--Orygun (talk) 05:59, 14 October 2016 (UTC)
- @Orygun: So why don't you make the original hook clearer and remove some of the explanatory detail:
- ALT2: ... that Edward A. Geary was unanimously elected Speaker of the Oregon House of Representatives by his Republican and Democrat peers? Yoninah (talk) 13:16, 14 October 2016 (UTC)
- I'd propose clarifying the original hook, then. - Tim1965 (talk) 16:10, 14 October 2016 (UTC)
- ALT3
... that Edward A. Geary appeared to have been defeated as Speaker of the Oregon House of Representatives, but won unanimously after his rival lost his bid for re-election?
