EarthBound, fandom, fan translation, Marcus Lindblom
[edit]( Back to T:TDYK )

- ... that EarthBound's "religiously dedicated" fan base (cosplayers pictured) translated its sequel when Nintendo would not, and brought the game's localizer into the media limelight?

- The hook seems a bit misleading. It seems that in the hook and the articles EarthBound (series) and EarthBound are used interchangeably.--TonyTheTiger (T / C / WP:FOUR / WP:CHICAGO / WP:WAWARD) 04:07, 9 August 2014 (UTC)
- Until this is resolved, the hook is not worth evaluating.--TonyTheTiger (T / C / WP:FOUR / WP:CHICAGO / WP:WAWARD) 04:20, 9 August 2014 (UTC)
- Not only is the hook about the series, but so is the fandom article, IMO.--TonyTheTiger (T / C / WP:FOUR / WP:CHICAGO / WP:WAWARD) 04:09, 9 August 2014 (UTC)
The toolbox shows that EarthBound has 1 dab--TonyTheTiger (T / C / WP:FOUR / WP:CHICAGO / WP:WAWARD) 04:17, 9 August 2014 (UTC)The toolbox shows that Mother 3 fan translation has a bad link--TonyTheTiger (T / C / WP:FOUR / WP:CHICAGO / WP:WAWARD) 04:17, 9 August 2014 (UTC)
- Resolved the technical stuff. On the game and series being the same, it's natural for the namesake for a series to be a metonym. (This is perhaps complicated by the series article being called "EarthBound" when "Mother" is its common name.) The series is Japanese, so the only game to be released in English, EarthBound, is how the game and series is primarily known. The fan interest is channeled through the game EarthBound, though I can see how it would be caught up with the series. I think it works for the hook in that the fan base is linked to the individual game EarthBound and not the series EarthBound (Mother). czar ♔ 03:21, 14 August 2014 (UTC)
- Glad you cleared up the toolbox stuff. I am not really sold on the inability to use the two articles precisely.--TonyTheTiger (T / C / WP:FOUR / WP:CHICAGO / WP:WAWARD) 05:23, 14 August 2014 (UTC)
- I don't see what you want to be changed. The hook is very clearly referring to the individual game. It would be much more confusing if I linked to the series in the hook. Moreover, the fan base article is primarily attached to the individual game and not the series, so I don't see the point of bringing in the series at all. czar ♔ 15:12, 14 August 2014 (UTC)
- Maybe some other non-gamers could look at this.--TonyTheTiger (T / C / WP:FOUR / WP:CHICAGO / WP:WAWARD) 02:19, 18 August 2014 (UTC)

- Looks good to me; the articles other than EarthBound in this nomination clearly indicate that they are about "[the] 1994 video game EarthBound … known for its cult following and fan community" as EarthBound fandom puts it, rather than the untranslated first installment of the series. —innotata 22:18, 1 September 2014 (UTC)
