Desmarestia tropica
[edit]- ... that Desmarestia tropica, or tropical acidweed, is possibly extinct because of the 1982–83 El Niño event?
Source: "It inhabits cool water and has likely been affected by El Niño events in the last three decades, particularly the 1982-83 event, which greatly reduced macro-algal coverage across the archipelago. Since this species was found at two locations historically, and has not been found in recent decades, a 100% reduction in known populations is evident [1]- ALT1:... that the critically endangered or possibly extinct seaweed Desmarestia tropica is one of only fifteen protists evaluated by IUCN for conservation status?

- The article is new enough and long enough. It is neutral and uses inline citations. Good faith is assumed for the paywalled sources. There do not appear to be copyright issues. The hook is cited. The QPQ review doesn't seem to be complete, but this is your first DYK, so QPQ is not required. Gulumeemee (talk) 03:54, 21 December 2017 (UTC)
