Cotton Tierney

Cotton Tierney

  • ... that Cotton Tierney's (pictured) great-great-nephew named a website after him that has received over 4 million page views?

  • Five-fold expansion confirmed. Recent nature of expansion confirmed. Hook is short enough and interesting. Hook is supported by an inline citation to a reliable source. Article is generally supported by reliable sources. Spot-checking reveals no copyvio/plagiarism issues. I have two areas of concern. First, the short-cut citations to newspaper article do not include the title of the article or the date of publication. If the url citations from google news search become outdated, none of these citations will have any meaning. I do think that should be remedied. Second, the assertion of "public domain" for the image is questionable. The summary suggests the photograph was taken "circa 1920" but provides no information about the photographer or about when/where it was published to support PD status. Also, the link provided for the image "source" does not contain the image. For these reasons, I don't think the image can/should be used on the Main Page. Cbl62 (talk) 00:50, 28 June 2012 (UTC)
  • I can fill in the citations with proper templates, I just did the expansion this morning and haven't had a chance. That isn't a DYK requirement though. As for the image, if it's from before 1/1/1923, it's public domain. Unfortunately, I'm not sure if it is from before 1/1/1923 or not. If I could tell which team's jersey he was wearing, that could narrow it down. The pic is used at BR.[1] – Muboshgu (talk) 01:01, 28 June 2012 (UTC)
  • I agree that perfect citations are not a DYK requirement, but bare urls are unacceptbale. These aren't bare url's, but they're pretty bare. Once you fill in the citations, let me know and I'll approve this, but without the pic. I also tried to glean which uniform he was wearing in hopes that it would give a clue as to the year the photo was taken. However, even if the photo was taken before 1923, I believe that its PD status requires that it have been "published" before 1923. Given the multiple uncertainties, the image really shouldn't run on the Main Page. Cbl62 (talk) 01:12, 28 June 2012 (UTC)
  • But by definition, these aren't bare url's, and they shouldn't be a problem as they are. I'm starting to fill them in now, but that isn't in the DYK rules. As to the picture, it's a shame because it shows up great at 100px, but since we can't verify the time of its publication, I agree it can't be used. – Muboshgu (talk) 02:39, 28 June 2012 (UTC)
  • You're correct, it's not a reason to reject for DYK. So this is approved without the image. And I appreciate your willingness to beef up the cites even though not required. Cbl62 (talk) 03:12, 28 June 2012 (UTC)
  • Thanks for the review. I'll have the citations filled out by the time this hits the main page. – Muboshgu (talk) 04:35, 28 June 2012 (UTC)
