Coffee production in Sri Lanka
[edit]... that coffee production in Sri Lanka (pictured) of arabica, occurred in the 1660s with seeds probably originating from Yemen?
Created by Rosiestep (talk), Nvvchar (talk). Nominated by Nvvchar (talk) at 05:15, 12 June 2015 (UTC).
- Comment: There are issues with this article outlined on the talk page which must be dealt with before this article could be passed. @Nvvchar: @Rosiestep: can you address these issues so someone can start this review? ColonialGrid (talk) 05:51, 16 July 2015 (UTC)
- I think the issues are now resolved, and will shortly review this article. ColonialGrid (talk) 06:32, 23 July 2015 (UTC)
- The article doesn't mention the 1660s so Ive scrubbed the hook. Can I suggest. Victuallers (talk) 13:17, 26 July 2015 (UTC)

... that coffee production in Sri Lanka initially didn't use the coffee berries as only the leaves and flowers were used? (alt2) ... that coffee production in Sri Lanka initially didn't use the coffee beans?

- Both ALT1 and ALT2 are inaccurate as the growing of coffee plants by the native Sinhalese did not constitute coffee production. Dan arndt (talk) 08:44, 27 July 2015 (UTC)
- Besides the hooks, do you have any remaining problems with the article? I would like to finish this review, and will likely propose another hook. ColonialGrid (talk) 12:29, 27 July 2015 (UTC)
- To be honest I'm in the middle of expanding the article, in particular the history of coffee cultivation in Ceylon. I'm still tracking down the dates and people involved in its initial cultivation. Dan arndt (talk) 13:13, 27 July 2015 (UTC)
- No problem, let me know when you're done (a ping here is fine) and I'll complete the review. Thanks to everyone for their patience in this slow review. ColonialGrid (talk) 13:32, 27 July 2015 (UTC)
- I there is an issue here @ColonialGrid:, @Dan arndt:. DYK requires nomination within a week. I don't think this process can go on forever, although of course the improvement in the article can continue. As it is there is no hook at the moment! Taking Dan's point I propose the one below. I do think we need to get this nom to the main page or withdraw the nomination quite quickly. Victuallers (talk) 16:23, 27 July 2015 (UTC)

... that although the Sinhalese were harvesting coffee plants, at first, there was no coffee production in Sri Lanka?

Review
[edit]- Article
- New – The article was new enough at time of nomination.
- Long enough – the article was long enough, at over 4000 characters.
- Within policy – The article is neutral, free of integrity issues (with some good faith given to non-internet based publications) and generally within policy, however, there is one issue:
- "The first recorded coffee plantation of that time was in Baddegama, Galle District, as a planted garden crop. The venture failed due to the unsuitability of the area for coffee cultivation. The first to successfully grow coffee on a commercial scale was George Bird, who established a coffee plantation in Singhapitiya. Edward Barnes, who became Governor of Ceylon in 1824, established another plantation in Gannoruwa[7] in 1825." is not supported by the citation given.
- I have now fixed this issue, using sources already in the article and removing what I couldn't verify quickly. Anything I removed can be added later, but given how long this has already taken, I think getting the review complete is more important. ColonialGrid (talk) 08:05, 28 July 2015 (UTC)

- Format – Alt4 proposed above is acceptable, but I propose an alt hook of:
- ALT5: ... that coffee production in Sri Lanka (pictured) never recovered from Emily?

I think this article is good to go as soon as the citation problem is fixed. Sorry again for how badly this review has gone. ColonialGrid (talk) 07:34, 28 July 2015 (UTC)
- I reckon this article is now good to go. ColonialGrid (talk) 08:05, 28 July 2015 (UTC) - Thanks (I added an extra ref to cover Mr Barnes above - you are allowed to fix errors during a review if you have time). Victuallers (talk) 08:11, 28 July 2015 (UTC)
- Hi, I came by to promote this but then noticed that @ColonialGrid: approved his own hook, which is not allowed. I think the ALT4 hook is pretty weak, but ALT5 is very good. So I'll go ahead and approve it. I have access to HighBeam, so I can say that the ALT5 ref is verified and cited inline. ALT5 good to go. Yoninah (talk) 12:11, 31 July 2015 (UTC)
