ALT1: ... that Exquisite Urchins were being sold on eBay before they had been formally identified as a new species?
ALT2: ... that the species Coelopleurus exquisitus had not been identified until a specimen was auctioned on eBay?
- Comment: The first hook is the hookiest with the ALTs being backup plans that shouldn't really be necessary

- I would go with the original hook but suggest a slight alteration to:
... that a listing on eBay led to the discovery of a new species of exquisite urchin?
