Barn the Spoon
Barn the Spoon

  • Although the image may not be usable unless the OTRS permission comes through in time, this is a nice article about an unusual subject with an interesting hook. Maybe the hook could be a little more catchy? I do question whether this might POSSIBLY be seen as promotional, although here, it doesn't bother me. The sources look great and well-used, and when I run it through Earwig, I see no copyvio - the ONLY phrases that are picked up on are correctly quoted and attributed, so this is copyvio-free. While reviewing the page, I removed one section that was unreferenced/uncited, but everything else is cited and attributed. It is really only the fact that the hook needs a tiny bit more kick, and that the image needs to be more solidly approved, that prevent this from being a green tick and a Good To Go. Mabalu (talk) 18:06, 25 April 2017 (UTC)
Thanks Mabalu for the review and the fair edit. The issue of OTRS is interesting to me, as I don't ever approach anyone for images until after the article is finished, but of course dyk has to be within 7 days and there's nothing I can really do to expedite the process. I was sent a copy of the permissions form but of course it has an email address on it so I can't reproduce it here and wouldn't prove anything anyway. I guess if anyone is unhappy with it it can be removed from the hook. Any suggestions re the hook are appreciated, i've added an alt1. I usually get told the hook is too long so I was trying to keep it short this time! Cheers. Mramoeba (talk) 19:08, 25 April 2017 (UTC)
I like the ALT2 hook better, "green wood" is more intriguing to me. I still wonder whether we OUGHT to be putting up the name of the spoon festival, as it may be a bit of "product placement". Perhaps something like:
That way, if anyone wants to know more about the festival, they can click through, but it's not like the name of the event is in front of their face? Once the hook text is approved, it would be good to go, with the caveat that the image would need to have been confirmed as approved by the time it goes live, IF DYK decide to use the image. They may just use the text - having an image isn't necessarily a guarantee that an image WILL be used. Mabalu (talk) 09:40, 26 April 2017 (UTC)
Happy with that. No need for the festival name, it just sounded amusing to me. Thanks. Mramoeba (talk) 12:48, 26 April 2017 (UTC)
  • for ALT2 hook text. The image will need to be confirmed as having OTRS clearance if it is to be used. Otherwise, good to go. Thanks for being so easy to work with, Mramoeba! Mabalu (talk) 13:48, 26 April 2017 (UTC)
Comment only: I've messaged the OTRS noticeboard asking if the image permissions can be expedited, I'm guessing they are pretty busy though. Mramoeba (talk) 21:02, 29 April 2017 (UTC)
Image ticket approved.   — Jeff G. ツ (talk) 22:26, 29 April 2017 (UTC)
  • Is it possible to reduce the repetition in the hook?
  • ALT2: ... that Barn the Spoon (pictured) is a green wood spoon carver who co-founded a spoon carving festival? Yoninah (talk) 22:01, 2 May 2017 (UTC)
Hmm, tricky, that's his speciality. How about

Does that work better? Mramoeba (talk) 22:26, 2 May 2017 (UTC)

MUCH better! I like that one. Mabalu (talk) 22:37, 2 May 2017 (UTC)
  • ALT3a: ... that Barn the Spoon (pictured) co-founded a spoon carving festival? Yoninah (talk) 22:19, 3 May 2017 (UTC)
  • I thought of suggesting a different hook: ... that it takes Barn the Spoon (pictured) between twenty minutes and two hours to carve a spoon out of green wood? but am unable to find the information cited to footnote 10. Footnote 10 doesn't say anything about how long it takes to make a spoon, nor that Barn works in a glass-fronted shop. I haven't checked the other footnotes to verify that they contain the information cited to them. Yoninah (talk) 22:39, 3 May 2017 (UTC)
That does look like a mix-up with the sources. Reference 10 doesn't actually seem to mention Barn at all, apart from linking to him below the article, which is odd. I must have missed that one. I think the citation was supposed to be for reference 6. I wonder whether Mramoeba may have meant to cite it to this article which came up on Google and seems to support that sentence? Mabalu (talk) 22:56, 3 May 2017 (UTC)
  • @Mabalu: thanks for responding. I mixed you up with the page creator; you both have usernames beginning with an M; sorry about that. I pinged Mramoeba. Yoninah (talk) 23:00, 3 May 2017 (UTC)
I think I have mixed up two different Telegraph articles by using the wrong refname. I will take a look now, sorry. Mramoeba (talk) 23:05, 3 May 2017 (UTC)
Ok I've fixed that, in fact I did a couple of refnames mixed up, and Mabalu was right, it should have been for Spitalfields Life. Ref 10 (which is now 21) was a ref for the chairman of the Craft council, the co-creator of Spoonfest. Thanks for the new citation btw, i'm going to take a look at that now! Sorry for the confusion and thanks for spotting it. Mramoeba (talk) 23:21, 3 May 2017 (UTC)
By the way I'm also fine with Yoninah's suggestion about 20 minutes to 2 hours to carve a spoon. My hooks usually get changed so I better let you guys decide. Mramoeba (talk) 23:40, 3 May 2017 (UTC)
  • We could ask another reviewer (Mabalu?) to look at ALT4, although I think that much more could be made out of this hook.
  • ALT4: ... that it takes Barn the Spoon (pictured) between 20 minutes and two hours to carve a spoon out of green wood? Yoninah (talk) 19:13, 6 May 2017 (UTC)
Fine with this one also. Thanks. Mramoeba (talk) 21:50, 8 May 2017 (UTC)
  • Green tickYPromoted as "quirky", so we don't need the image. Montanabw(talk)
  • Pulled from prep since ALT4 has not been approved by a reviewer; having the original nominator say "fine" just means there are no objections to the new hook, not that it has been fully checked. BlueMoonset (talk) 03:59, 14 May 2017 (UTC)
  • Green tickYI checked it and it is fine, BlueMoonset what's the protocol for re-promotion? Does someone else have to do so now? Montanabw(talk) 07:32, 14 May 2017 (UTC)
  • @Montanabw: the ALT4 hook needs an actual review and approval icon. If you do it, someone else can promote it. Thanks, Yoninah (talk) 09:16, 14 May 2017 (UTC)
  • I DID. The hook ALT4 is properly sourced. Hence my question if now someone other than me has to promote it. Montanabw(talk) 09:36, 14 May 2017 (UTC)
Comment only: It was approved each time with the image and to be honest the guys over at OTRS made a special effort to approve the ticket for us. I think the photo makes it better. Thanks. Mramoeba (talk) 10:21, 14 May 2017 (UTC)
  • Yes, Montanabw, someone else has to promote it. The same person is not allowed to approve and promote a nomination at DYK. BlueMoonset (talk) 14:53, 14 May 2017 (UTC)
