Ashley Mears
[edit]- ... that sociologist Ashley Mears conducted an ethnography of the fashion industry while working as a model in New York and London? Source: "She spent some time in London and found that even harder than New York. [...] In between seminars she entered a world of casting calls from early morning till late at night that she describes as "daily brushes with humiliation, insecurity, rejection and anger". Mears kept a notepad tucked into her portfolio, detailing all that she saw and interviewing models and scouts she met along the way. She told her agency what she was doing, but says: "I don't think they got it... when I said I was a PhD and I wanted to write about my experiences for research material, they were like, 'Oh, cute!'" [1]
- ALT1:... that sociologist Ashley Mears almost abandoned her research into the fashion industry because her modeling career was going so well? Source: "At one point in the book, you admit to almost being sucked into modeling and abandoning your graduate studies. [Mears:] I started doing well. "Well," according to the standards in the industry. Objectively, I wasn't making any money. But I booked a couple of jobs for a couple of high-status designers. And I did a couple of shows at Fashion Week in New York. [2]
