This template may be used to facilitate article translations from French Wikipedia articles, where the French gloss 1re means 1st, styled in English as 1st per the Manual of style.
The goal of this template is to prevent red links from appearing while a translator is working on an article. All occurrences of this template should eventually be replaced by its content, so {{subst}}'ing it is fine, and typing 1st instead is even better, but its value is in easing the translator's job by allowing them to ignore the imported French template and concentrate on actual translation of content.
This template should not be added to any article that does not already have it. Because of this, there is no Usage or Parameters section here, as the intention is for all occurrences of this template to be replaced.
