The Zuni marine transgression is associated with the [| Paleocene-Eocene Thermal Maximum] c.55Ma, which may be associated with the final rifting of North America from Europe, and the opening up of the then-young North Atlantic. Also, newborn sea floor is hot, thin, and buoyant; a pulse of sea-floor spreading c.55Ma, associated with rifting in the North Atlantic, could have (geologically) quickly created a stretch of shallow seafloor, which would have pushed oceans up onto continents.
