Shaanxi vs. Zigong
[edit]According to sources in the book "Salt - a World History" on page 375. It was merchants from the Shaanxi province. Jealous of the Shaanxi Merchants the Sichuan Merchants erected their own guild hall on the banks of the Fuxxi river. In the modern day - this other guild hall is a teahouse that is part of the museum. I'll make the corrections.
BTW - they met in the Sichuan province because the salt wells of Zigong were the best in China. They also met in Sichuan because the salt was taxed in route from the production center (Zigong) to the consumer. So meeting next the source of production was in their best financial interest.
- Further - the wealthy families of Shanxxi were actually the main investors in salt wells in the area. Phreakster 1998 16:43, 5 November 2006 (UTC)
I agree
[edit]and I'm changing it. Documentation I've read state the guild hall was for the salt merchants of the sichuan province. There are no significant salt wells in Shaanxi province.
I'm a little confused on the statement "a meeting place for salt merchants from Shaanxi province."
Why did salt mechants from Shaanxi meet in the Sichuan province?
