Dragonball

Anyone want to comment on how similar this character is to Goku of Dragonball fame? Super-powered monkey boy sent to destroy the planet who turns into a great hero. Even Overdrive is very Super-Sayan. ZPS102 00:58, 29 March 2006 (UTC)

A passing note may be alright, if it adds to the article as a whole. I'd wait until there were more pieces of trivia to add to the article first, though. Knight of Ashitaka 20:20, 3 January 2007 (UTC)

I'm against it entirely. It's comparison-cruft. King Zeal 21:46, 3 January 2007 (UTC)

I don't really think it'd be much use myself, but it is a fact that people have compared the two characters, and if he can find the sources to back him up, I don't see why he shouldn't be able to add a line saying "Comparisons have been made by many people between Zidane and Goku, the main character of Dragon Ball Z." or something to that effect. Knight of Ashitaka 18:31, 5 January 2007 (UTC)

A line like that is just a weasel statement. According to the Wikipedia rules, it doesn't belong. King Zeal 18:47, 5 January 2007 (UTC)

A similar line would be if it were properly backed up, although the line would have to specifically mention the group(s) of people in the source(s). Knight of Ashitaka 21:06, 5 January 2007 (UTC)

It would only work if it answer the question of what people, from what background, in what referenced source, have noted Zidane's similarity to Sun Wukong in the past. (Goku isn't the only monkey protagonist, you know.) King Zeal 22:29, 5 January 2007 (UTC)

If you allow the Zidane-Goku connection you can make the connection to Sun Wukong anyway. Besides, just because Zidane's similarity to every monkey-like protagonist ever created isn't noticed doesn't mean you can't mention that people have noticed their similarity to some. If you can back up your claim, you can include it. If not, it's weaseling. You're more likely to find a valid source for comparisons with Goku than for comparisons with Sun Wukong. 86.144.210.51 14:12, 6 January 2007 (UTC)

There are several characters that he can be compared to that all fit somewhat into the goku monkey-thing catagory: Sun Wukong, Songoku from Dragonball, Songoku from Saiyuki, Goku from Read or Die, etc. There's just too many monkey-demon type characters around. You can no more make the comparison between Zidane and Songoku than you can make a comparison between Steiner and Sir Lancealot. For that matter, I can compare Trance-Zidane to Supersonic if I wanted to. It's comparison-cruft, leave it out of the article.

Character overview

I think there are a lot of good observations made, but the fact remains that none of this is official. I would suggest this section be kept, but altered to indicate that it is only one way of viewing him. His character's motivations and thoughts were largely left up to the interpretation of the player. Also, I think his hometown information should be altered to avoid spoilers, since there are no such indicators in the sidebar.

I went ahead and edited the spoiler. No spoiler notations should equal no spoiler included. Also, took it upon myself to add a note on character overview.

  • I know this page isn't nearly as popular as, say, Cloud Strife, but that doesn't mean it gets to get away with an entire section of original research. See WP:NOR, and for a decent example of how to do this kind of thing right, see Cloud's entry. Kybard 21:45, 19 July 2006 (UTC)

Life

The talk of his life should start with his life as a member of Tantalus and then introduce the rest at the point where it gets introduced in the game, with a spoiler warning inserted at that point. Hackwrench 06:36, 10 July 2006 (UTC)

Zidane?

Is this name choosen by Square only because Zidane fame in 1998? —The preceding unsigned comment was added by 201.79.5.46 (talkcontribs) 09:50, September 3, 2006.

Most likely not. Here is an excerpt from the [FF Name Origins Site]: Several people have sent me the name of a popular French soccer player named Zinedine Zidane. I'm extremely skeptical that Square would base one of their main characters on an actual person, though. Ebony opines: "For me it's coming from "gitan" (a french word meaning gipsy) and "tzigane" (this one also exists in English). In RPG, the gitan class is close to the thief class, so it fairly fits for FF9's main character. Also Tribal alludes to how the gipsys live (in tribes), and Zidane is also living with a band." Main Protagonist vs. Protagonist

Main protagonist means main main character and protagonist just means main character. Could we leave it as protagonist or else it will be confusing?67.142.130.46 22:42, 13 January 2007 (UTC)Eileen67.142.130.46 22:42, 13 January 2007 (UTC)

Comparison to Bartz and Tidus

I was wondering why the statement was removed that says Zidane's character may have later been the influence for tidus' personality in FFX. anyway does anyone think it's sensible to place it there? look at this site: http://en.allexperts.com/e/z/zi/zidane_tribal.htm particularly on the character overview part. Is this like a mirror site to wikipedia? the contents are very the same but it's actually the older content than what is here right now. it also says there that Bartz of FFV may have also been an influence but it looks like an opinion. does anyone agree? —The preceding unsigned comment was added by 210.1.95.140 (talk) 18:02, 20 January 2007 (UTC).

The Truth Revealed

"He attempted to fight Garland, only for his Terran soul to be removed from his body to be less of a threat to Garland's plan."

I don't think his soul was removed from his body, and if it was, it was not made very clear in the game. Is it safe to say this happened?

"However, Zidane maintained his identity with anguish that everything he knew was a lie and has no true purpose of his own."

I don't think this sentence makes sense; maybe it should be re-phrased to make its meaning clearer or removed altogether. EatMana 16:59, 24 January 2007 (UTC)

Also: "it was there Zidane met Garland and learned of his true origin and nature."

This is confusing as one cannot tell if Zidane learned of his own true origin and nature, or of Garland's true origin and nature. EatMana 17:06, 24 January 2007 (UTC)
