[edit]Zhang was an impractical bookworm, who impressed foreign powers by his seemingly reformist appearance and rhetoric, deep inside he was a through and through conservative bureaucrat. He mismanaged the steel mill by interfering its technical design, which my grandfather had to rescue by turnaround management. In private life he was a womanizer and unfaithful to his wife, His scholarly proclaimation was highly hypocratical. —Preceding unsigned comment added by 69.227.48.126 (talk • contribs)

Modernization and position during the Boxer Rebellion
[edit]Zhang's method of modernization was essentially "Western technology and Chinese philosophy", in other words, adopt western technology, but not western philosophy, politics and non technological items. He favored keeping Confucianism and Chinese culture.Rajmaan (talk) 03:08, 5 March 2013 (UTC)

After the Boxer rebellion, he managed to ward off foreign soldiers coming into his provinces by flattering the British consul Fraser and letting slip that he allegedly "hates the Manchus".
