Brief background

Yusmadi is a lawyer and former Member of Parliament of Malaysia (2008-2013) with a wealth of experience in law, politics, human rights and international affairs with strong passion in public diplomacy and public service. His contribution in public service was duly recognized internationally when he was awarded Hubert H. Humphrey Fellowship (Law & Human Rights) by the Fulbright Commission in 2006-2007.

Yusmadi is a partner specializing in criminal defense, human rights & public interest cases at Fahda Nur & Yusmadi, a boutique law firm in Malaysia.

Apart from practicing law, Yusmadi has founded RIGHTS, a regional law, diplomacy & charity group. RIGHTS is a platform of where multidisciplinary talents in the region collaborate for the rights of the people. RIGHTS provides 'Rights' solutions for individuals, governments, companies and NGOs to comply with the standards of United Nations Declaration of Human Rights.

Yusmadi is a prolific writer and his views on law, politics and international affairs are sought after by both print and electronic media. Yusmadi appears regularly as guest speaker, panelist, discussant and participant in local and international media (Astro, NDTV, Chanel News Asia etc).

He is also a regular invited speaker in important international forums and conferences such as Doha Forum (Doha), Forum 2000 (Prague), EducationUSA Asia Pacific Conference (Kuala Lumpur), World Forum for Democracy 2013 (Strasbourg) etc

As Member of Parliament he has represented Malaysia in many multilateral, inter-parliamentarians caucuses meetings such as United Nation General Assembly (New York), Commonwealth Political Parties meeting (Maldives), Special mission to International Criminal Court in Hague by Inter Parliamentary Union (IPU) Committee led by Datuk Seri Nazri Aziz, Minister in Prime Minister Department in charge of Legal Affairs and Parliament, Asia Pacific Parliamentarians Forum (Mongolia), World E-Parliament (Rome), Asia Forum of Parliamentarians on Population and Development (Vietnam) etc.

As a Member of Parliament, he was appointed as a Member of Malaysia Anti-Corruption Commission Parliamentary Special Committee by DYMM Seri Paduka Baginda Yang Di Pertuan Agong (the King of Malaysia).

In 2013 Yusmadi was invited by the Secretary General of Commonwealth, HE Kamalesh Sharma to be part of the Commonwealth Election Observer Team (led by Dr. Lawrence Gonzi former Prime Minister of Malta) for Maldives Presidential Election (2013).

Yusmadi is a graduate of LL.B (Hons) from International Islamic University Malaysia where he studied both common law and Islamic law. While attending Hubert H. Humphrey Fellowship, he has pursued postgraduate studies in International Human Rights Law at American University Washington College of Law in Washington D.C.
