Looks great! But euhmmm... care to translate? --The Minister of War 12:34, 15 September 2005 (UTC)[reply]
Currently, I am time constrained. Let's wait until he gets ratified (if he gets, of course). Sashazlv 20:03, 15 September 2005 (UTC)[reply]
Is this the same thing listed on Yuri Yehanurov now ? -- PFHLai 18:02, 22 September 2005 (UTC)[reply]

The bio is now being translated by me from Ukrainian. Please wait a little bit --Irpen 03:32, 23 September 2005 (UTC)[reply]

Big rewrite

[edit]

just completed a big rewrite of the article. However, because I dont speak much Ukranian, some points remain open:

was he born in Belkachi or Delkachi?

Belkachi.

I wasnt really sure which of his earlier posts to list, perhaps somebody knows which are most interesting?

Will return to this later.

Kievgorstroy? Is that right?

Yes. The meaning is: Kiev-gor-stroy - Kiev-city-construction

Glavkievstroy is that right?

Yes. The meaning is: Glav-kiev-stroy - Main-Kiev-construction

Should the word Director be translated into Chairman or into CEO? What kind of role does a Ukranian "director" have?

Strictly speaking, neither, as far as Soviet times are concerned. And certainly, not a director in the sense of one who directs movies. The closest would be manager. Essentially, the role is the same as of a CEO, but he did not hold posts in joint-stock companies.

I saw he was formerly member of the Popular Democratic Party. Did they merge into Our Ukraine, or did Y himself just split off and join dear Victor?

The Popular Democratic Party party was created by Kuchma and Co. specifically for 1998 parliamentary elections. The head was and is Valeriy Pustovoitenko. In 2002 elections they joined the Za Yedynu Ukrayinu (For United Ukraine) block, which was a rival of Our Ukraine block. Yekhanurov was with Yushchenko since at least December 1999, long before Our Ukraine came into existence.

Anybody know the answers to these questions? --The Minister of War 21:20, 23 September 2005 (UTC)[reply]

See above. Sashazlv 00:08, 24 September 2005 (UTC)[reply]

Keep tranlsating?

[edit]

Do I need to translate the rest? I think most important posts are already in the article. No one really cares when he seized being the head of "BudDetal" and became the VP for commerce of GolovKyivMiskBud". Or do they? I could finish it withing a couple of days, but since the significant moments of his bio are already covered, I could do something else within my alotted time. Just say here if there is an interest to continue the translation. Thanks! --Irpen 05:25, 24 September 2005 (UTC)[reply]

Depends if something is worth noting; as i dont speak Ukranian, i am in no position to tell! To be honest, i dont even know whether BudDetal is more interesting than Glavkievstroy, I just grabbed the things out of the very concise Bio of the AXIS and the BBC. What do you think? Is any of the stuff in ukranian more interesting? --The Minister of War 13:14, 24 September 2005 (UTC)[reply]
PS i'd love to find a date on him finishing his PhD!
I guess it makes sense to translate it all, since there is popular demand. Sashazlv 14:55, 24 September 2005 (UTC)[reply]

All right, I will translate everything else but pls be patient. I will keep doing it in small steps. And please correct my translation if anyone has better versions of the terms. --Irpen 19:18, 24 September 2005 (UTC)[reply]

Idiom

[edit]

There are a couple of cases where the article says that Yekhanurov held an office "shortly". This seems to be being used as if it meant "he held it briefly" or "for a short time". If this is the intended meaning, it is not idiom: "shortly" means, in those contexts, "soon", "a short time after" the previous event. I am amending to what I think is meant; if I am wrong, please recast the sentence anyway. Septentrionalis 15:20, 24 September 2005 (UTC)[reply]

The present text also implies that he was out of parliament at some point between 1998 and 2001. Is this true? Are Ukrainian ministers forbidden to sit in the Rada? Septentrionalis 15:24, 24 September 2005 (UTC)[reply]

Feel free to correct the idioms as seems fit for a native speaker. Thanks for help.
Regarding parliamentary members. The Constitution of Ukraine states that a parliamentary member cannot hold any other post (except teaching, making artwork and the like). Ministers do have physical seats in the parliamentary chamber. But they do not sit there in the sense of having a voting right (in contrast to the U.K. or Israel). The incompatibility requirement is often violated, e.g., a deputy who was appointed to the executive branch often "forgets" to submit his/her resignation or intentionally misaddresses it. As a rule, such violations bring about public scandals. Sashazlv 15:41, 24 September 2005 (UTC)[reply]

Yuri or Yuriy

[edit]

I thought that Wikipedia used to avoid "iy" and replace them with "i". SHouldn't we do that to Mr Yekhanurov as well? Andelarion 21:50, 6 October 2005 (UTC)[reply]

Possibly. Is it wiki policy? I wouldnt know. Which other articles have that? --The Minister of War 12:50, 13 October 2005 (UTC)[reply]
There isn't a single firm rule for Ukrainian transliteration; for people's names there is often a most-common form used in literature or news media. Lacking that, in this case I think -iy makes the spelling clear. (Place names use the national system, linguistics uses scientific transliteration; see Romanization of Ukrainian) Michael Z. 2005-10-13 17:37 Z
BBC lists him as Yuri, RFE/RL as Yuriy. Hmmm. Wel i'm fine either way. btw: much more sensible wording! :-) --The Minister of War 10:00, 14 October 2005 (UTC)[reply]

PM

[edit]

He is the current prime minister and will be the PM of Ukraine (acting or otherwise), until someone else (probably Tymoshenko) assumes the post. This is to explain my revert: Yuliya Tymoshenko is not yet prime minister. --Berkut 01:45, 23 June 2006 (UTC)[reply]

Okedoky, '"Yuriy Ivanovych Yekhanurov is in his last days as"....' is quite an interesting beginning of a wikipedia article isn't it? Mariah-Yulia
