Stribling's record appears astonishingly impressive, but should be viewed with caution. The mere fact that he fought 55 times in a year should be enough to alert you that the opposition was often very weak. In reality, the opposition were often not professional boxers but simply members of the public who had been encouraged to 'step up & try their luck'. Stribling is also said to have been given a helping hand in the bouts that were supposedly competitive. In 'The Harder They Fall' 'Bold text', one of the greatest ever books about boxing Budd Schulberg says (p91) Young Stribbling (sic) had knocked out his chauffeur (known variously as Joe White,Joe King, Joe Saco,Joe Doktor,Joe Clancy, etc) in practically every town in USA In reality, Stribling was a decent boxer who reached a level somewhat short of world-class. By going the distance with Jack Sharkey & lasting into R15 with Schmeling he proved he had skill, stamina & great heart but both men beat him convincingly. His greatest ring achievement was his win over Primo Carnera but Carnera's record was also highly dubious & he is commonly described as the worst world H/W champion of all time.
