Notable parks named Young, Young's, etc., and current PROD
[edit]This disambiguation page survives as I left it in 2011, except for subsequent deletion of mention of "Youngs Harbor Park" in Keswick, Ontario. I had apparently thought that would be wikipedia-notable from info that I found at http://yorknorth.cioc.ca/record/GEO0278, back then.
Now, further, there's a "Proposed deletion", a PROD, now, on article Young's Park (Overland Park, Kansas), which is an item on this disambiguation page. If that article is deleted presumably its item would be dropped from this disambiguation page.
I don't particularly remember, but I created that article back in 2011, so 11 years ago, with an edit summary "stub article to support disambiguation of Youngs Park", and with content:
Youngs Park is a park in Overland Park, Kansas.
It has an area of 14.47 acres and includes a playground, a pool, and various recreational facillities, as well as a "historic area".
with an inline reference to http://www.opkansas.org/Things-to-See-And-Do/List-of-City-Parks#YoungsPark. I also then created this combo disambiguation page Young Park, which covers parks named "Young" and variations with "Young's" or "Youngs". I am trying to sort out, now, what I knew and thought about the topic of Young's Park (Overland Park, Kansas).
Not sure yet if I object strongly to the PROD or if it is okay for it to be deleted. --Doncram (talk) 18:12, 11 October 2022 (UTC) Doncram (talk) 18:12, 11 October 2022 (UTC)
Yesterday, User:MB helped out at that article (thanks!) by improving the reference, which is now presented as:[1]

And since 2011, the following was added:
A private lake once sat on the property. The lake was originally supposed to be North Kilarney Lake. Landowner William B. Strang Jr. intended to establish a recreational park on the site, just as he did with his South Kilarney Lake, now South Lake Park. A family by the name of Young bought the property after Strang's death, and the lake area soon was known by their name. The Youngs donated the property that became the park to the city.
An option to consider is to cover the topic at the William B. Strang Jr. article, and redirect to there, instead of deleting the article. --Doncram (talk) 18:19, 11 October 2022 (UTC)
- @Doncram, the prod on the park article has been removed due to your objection. But I can't see any reason to keep it or even redirect it. It's a small routine city park. It would be out of place discussing it in Overland Park, Kansas or William B. Strang Jr. The only place I think it could be redirected would be J. H. Young family or List of parks in Overland Park, Kansas. I found this and there isn't much about this park. It says the Young's sold the property to the city in 1962. To avoid an AFD, you could ask for a G7 CSD as author. MB 15:09, 17 October 2022 (UTC)
- Thank you User:MB for following up here (which is the location I preferred) and providing this update and suggestion. Sorry I have not been able to focus on this in the last few days. Elsewhere i previously commented that I preferred to discuss the PROD and whatever else here, rather than at Talk:Young's Park (Overland Park, Kansas) because I thought (and still do) that you and another editor may be right that that article should be redirected or otherwise removed, and I wanted to have new info generated by discussion placed here at a location which will presumably not be deleted. And I further commented:
- BEGIN QUOTE "But, offhand, I already think there might be a better alternative or two, i.e. to mention/cover this topic elsewhere and redirect to there, with candidates being:
- William B. Strang Jr.,
- Overland Park, Kansas, or
- a possible new article on "Downtown Overland Park" (which is a historic area, though maybe an area of buildings with no park, so like a historic district, and there is a "DOPP" nonprofit which oversees it). See https://downtownop.org/about-downton-overland-park/, or
- an article on the other park that William B. Strang Jr. developed much further, or a broader article on parks of Overland Park, or parks of the county." END QUOTE
- I do tend to think that the latter option, to redirect to a list of parks, is a leading contender. There have been numerous, probably too many, AFDs about parks, when like high schools and perhaps other topics it is probably better for the topics to be covered in list articles. The most recent parks related AFD I participated in was about one or more municipal parks in Los Angeles county, and the result was to merge to, and/or create, a list-article and to develop the list-article, List of parks in Los Angeles County, California. Offhand I think that can be done here. Again, I cannot address further today due to a real life deadline; in general I intend again to get back to here and I don't think opening an AFD would be helpful. To further discussion though, is it not reasonable to find or create a list-article on parks in Kansas and/or whatever county this is in Kansas, and to merge/redirect to that? And do you have comment about creating/developing/expanding any List of high schools in the United States or List of secondary schools in the United States, say, and going back to the many hundreds of AFDs relating to individual high schools and retrieving content to merge and redirect, in effect reversing numerous deletions? Gotta run now tho, again. --Doncram (talk) 16:14, 17 October 2022 (UTC)
- @Doncram, you probably won't like my answer but I just am not a big list person. I don't every really use most of them. I read about articles because I have heard about them in real life, or through links from other articles. If I wanted to find out what all the parks in Overland Park, Kansas were, I would go to here and have more confidence that it was complete and accurate. I don't see any value in WP repeating lists like that. But if you want to create such a article here, I will not try to delete it either. I still don't see any reason to keep this redirect around until/unless you create the list article. You can just recreate the redirect then (and about 70 others). At present, there is no valid reason for this to exist. Another question about the list, Category:Lists of parks in the United States shows there are only about 25 of these articles, mostly on big cities. Overland park is #127, so if you want to have lists of city parks on all cities that size or bigger, you have a lot of work ahead. I personally think there are a lot of other things more valuable to work on. MB 01:20, 18 October 2022 (UTC)
- Thanks, MB, you make good points. I do "like" lists and feel that many do make substantial contributions, but alas I am without an overall theory of lists (which i suppose could tie to a theory of AFDs). There could be many huge list-systems which could involve many person-years of development, not equal in their value to Wikipedia. I'll volunteer that I am bogged down in developing some, including unfinished Draft:Preserved locomotives in the United States and List of mountains in Utah, both of which I got involved into by AFDs. Hmm. --Doncram (talk) 03:36, 18 October 2022 (UTC)
- @Doncram, OK if you have no immediate plans to create a List of Parks in Overland Park, Kansas, can we delete this article. At present, it is not notable enough for a stand alone article. If you do create the list someday, you can create redirects for all ~70 parks in the city if you wish. Since it has been prodded once, it has to be deleted either by AFD or by author-requested CSD. I really want to avoid the bureaucracy of AFD in this case Young's Park (Overland Park, Kansas). MB 21:48, 22 October 2022 (UTC)
