Personnel
[edit]Reliable sources have conflicting information about who actually performs for the recording besides Waters (vocal), Hooker (guitar), and Big Moose Walker (organ):
- Earnest Johnson (bass), Casey Jones (drums), unidentified (overdubbed percussion); no horn players are listed (note lack of "-1" identifier) – Wright & Rothwell p. 43
- Lafayette Leake (piano), Bobby Little (drummer), Earnest Johnson (bass), A. C. Reed (sax), Jackie Brenston (sax), unidentified (overdubbed percussion); this is "the same band that had played on 'Blue Guitar' with the addition of Jackie Brenston on baritone sax." – Danchin p. 139; note: these are the same as Wright & Rothwell listed for "You Shook Me", except for Brenston and the precussion
- A. C. Reed and Ernest Cotton (saxes), Willie Dixon (bass), Casey Jones (drums) – Muddy Waters: Chess box p. 29; these are the same as the box lists for "You Shook Me", except for Leake
Maybe clarify the "Personnel" subsection with something like (with refs):
- Muddy Waters – vocals [there are no other vocals, so "lead" is unmecessary]
- Earl Hooker – guitar
- John "Big Moose" Walker – organ
Additional musicians may include:
- A.C. Reed – tenor sax
- Jackie Brenston – baritone sax
- Ernest Cotton – sax
- Earnest Johnson or Willie Dixon – bass
- Casey Jones or Bobby Little – drums
- Lafayette Leake – piano
- Unidentified – overdubbed percussion

Merger proposal
[edit]- The following discussion is closed. Please do not modify it. Subsequent comments should be made in a new section. A summary of the conclusions reached follows.
- Not merged. enjoyer -- talk 23:28, 5 June 2021 (UTC)
Because of the lyrical similarities and the the fact that Zeppelin has acknowledged Willie Dixon as a song writer, I propose to merge Whole Lotta Love into this article--MarcusPearl95 (talk) 02:30, 24 February 2021 (UTC)
- What encyclopedic benefit would possibly be served by a merger in this case?! --IJBall (contribs • talk) 22:03, 26 February 2021 (UTC)
- I listed such benefits above. No reason to have two separate articles if they're the same thing.--MarcusPearl95 (talk) 23:18, 2 March 2021 (UTC)
- Strong oppose -- "Whole Lotta Love" is independently notable and is its own entity. It's even included as one of the 500 Greatest Songs in NME's list. That's shows how the song is notable on its own. They're separate entity. Period. enjoyer|talk 14:08, 16 April 2021 (UTC)
MarcusPearl95: Maybe it's time to wrap this up. Although it's clear that Zeppelin's song shares elements of "You Need Love" (apparently through the Small Faces version), they may have invested enough of their own to distinguish it. If new info comes to light, a new merger can be proposed. —Ojorojo (talk) 13:29, 18 April 2021 (UTC)
- Oppose as it is clearly independently notable. P-K3 (talk) 18:47, 19 April 2021 (UTC)
