Spelling

[edit]

The name of the ship is spelled two different ways in the article: KRI Macan Tutul and KRI Matjan Tutul. Is this proper, or should one of them be corrected? I am not at all familiar with Indonesian languages. Lou Sander (talk) 14:10, 28 December 2013 (UTC)[reply]

Indonesian here. Matjan Toetoel uses the Van Ophuijsen Spelling System (old Indonesian spelling that was used from 1901 to 1947, roughly when Indonesia was still under Dutch rule with the name "Dutch East Indies"), while Matjan Tutul uses the Republican Spelling System which replaced the Van Ophuijsen Spelling System, and Macan Tutul uses modern Indonesian spelling (or at least spelling since the Perfected Spelling System, which replaced the Republican Spelling System). From my experience, any of the three are de facto acceptable up until today, especially in historical texts and accounts thereof, due to historical purposes. Other examples include Soekarno/Sukarno, Soeharto/Suharto, Amir Sjarifoeddin/Sjarifuddin/Syarifuddin, and even Yos Soedarso/Sudarso. Usually, though, the name commonly used is the one that fits the era of the topic, for example Soekarno and Soeharto were born when Indonesia was still under Dutch rule, and Matjan Tutul was sunk after Indonesian de jure independence but before the Perfected Spelling System was established. For purposes of consistency, I suggest that only one spelling be used, and the other two variants should be mentioned just once as possible variations, for example "Matjan Tutul (older spelling: Matjan Toetoel, modern spelling: Macan Tutul)". I admit, there seems to be an unspoken problem of convention between using the spelling that fits the era of the topic and just using modern spelling all the way. --Bismabrj (talk) 03:09, 24 August 2020 (UTC)[reply]

Also there is an image of Yos Sudarso in the Indonesian Wikipedia, right HERE. If it is a valid free image, it would be good to include it on this page, and maybe in Wikimedia Commons. I am reluctant to try anything myself, due to the language barrier. Lou Sander (talk) 14:19, 28 December 2013 (UTC)[reply]
